{"id":33330,"date":"2025-05-17T07:37:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-17T07:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/33330\/"},"modified":"2025-05-17T07:37:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T07:37:10","slug":"tylor-megill-cant-shake-his-may-struggles-in-subway-series-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/33330\/","title":{"rendered":"Tylor Megill can&#8217;t shake his May struggles in Subway Series opener"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tylor Megill, with apologies to Frank Sinatra, was riding high in April, shot down in May.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mets right-hander had struggled in his two starts before Friday and then proceeded to turn in his shortest and sloppiest outing of the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Megill\u2019s biggest sin wasn\u2019t the contact he allowed \u2014 he sustained bad luck in that regard \u2014 but it was difficult to excuse his lack of control in the Mets\u2019 6-2 loss to the Yankees in the Bronx.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Overall, he surrendered four earned runs on four hits and five walks over 2 \u00b2\/\u2083 innings. Megill was knocked out in the third after the Yankees sent nine batters to the plate in the inning and placed the Mets in a 4-0 hole.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t throw enough strikes,\u201d manager Carlos Mendoza said. \u201cAnd when you are doing that against an offense like these guys, they are going to make you pay.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"35960135\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2215485597.jpg\" alt=\"Tylor Megill pitches during the first inning against the New York Yankees on May 16, 2025. \" class=\"wp-image-35960135\"\/>Tylor Megill pitches during the first inning against the New York Yankees on May 16, 2025.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Megill pitched to a 1.74 ERA in his six starts in March\/April. In each of his three starts since, he\u2019s allowed four earned runs, pitching five innings or fewer, for an 8.76 ERA over that stretch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just putting myself in bad situations and falling behind,\u201d Megill said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jorbit Vivas began Megill\u2019s downfall on this night with a solid single to right field leading off the third inning. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST<\/p>\n<p>Paul Goldschmidt followed with a broken-bat grounder that Francisco Lindor gloved behind second base. Lindor\u2019s throw to first bounced off Pete Alonso\u2019s glove, allowing a second run to score on the play.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Megill was about to start creating his own problems. Jason Dom\u00ednguez walked before Anthony Volpe\u2019s sacrifice fly extended the deficit to 3-0. Austin Wells and Oswald Peraza drew walks in succession \u2014 forcing in another run and ending Megill\u2019s night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour walks in an inning, that\u2019s just not going to cut it,\u201d Megill said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Griffin Canning and David Peterson, the scheduled Mets starters over the next two games, can only hope for better results.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kodai Senga, who has reemerged as the Mets ace this season, won\u2019t get to pitch in the series.
