{"id":34064,"date":"2025-05-17T14:53:32","date_gmt":"2025-05-17T14:53:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/34064\/"},"modified":"2025-05-17T14:53:32","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T14:53:32","slug":"benson-hays-hrs-give-reds-5-4-victory-over-guardians-in-first-game-of-ohio-cup-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/34064\/","title":{"rendered":"Benson, Hays HRs give Reds 5-4 victory over Guardians in first game of Ohio Cup series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"1\">Benson, Cleveland\u2019s No. 1 draft pick in 2016, drove a 361-foot home run into the right field bleachers in the second inning to give the Reds a 3-0 running start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"2\">Hays drove the first pitch of the third inning 375 feet into the left field seats to give the Reds a 5-0 lead&#8230;and that turned out to be the game-winner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"3\">The Reds didn\u2019t score after that and Cleveland chipped away until it was 5-4 after eight.<\/p>\n<p>Explore<a class=\"headline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/sports\/ask-hal-is-the-infield-fly-rule-still-in-the-rulebook\/KQQDN7IPENHT7GPHCSF6UNTLRQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ask Hal: Is the infield fly rule still in the rulebook?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"5\">Before the game, former Cleveland manager Tito Francona, managing his first game against his old team, told writers, \u201cI hope we don\u2019t face Jose Ramirez in the ninth inning with the game on the line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"7\">Ramirez homered in the eighth off Tony Sanguillen to draw the Guardians to within one and Francona said, \u201cWhen he hit it, I thought the wind might keep it in the ball park, but all the wind did was keep it from going into the river.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"9\">There was a slight heart-skipper opening the ninth with closer Emilio Pagan on the mound. Carlos Santana lifted one very high and very deep toward the right field wall. But it stayed in and Benson caught it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"10\">Pagan then retired the next two, ending it by striking out Gabriel Arias with a 3-and-2 high-and-in fastball. It was Pagan\u2019s 10th save in 12 opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"11\">So the Reds took the first step toward winning the three-game series and reclaiming the not-so-coveted Ohio Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"12\">The Indians\/Guardians have owned the Ohio Cup since 2015 and entering Friday\u2019s game Cleveland was 31-15 against the Reds since the trinket\u2019s inception.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"13\">Even though not many show much care about the Ohio Cup, Francona said before the game, \u201cIt\u2019s the Ohio Cub so that\u2019s some added pressure. Hey, I know all those guys and rooted for them last year. But I hope we beat them tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"16\">And they did, barely. Before he left after six innings, he had given up five runs (four earned) and a career-high 10 hits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"19\">The first two pitches of the third innings turned into hits \u2014 a first-pitch single by Gavin Lux and a first-pitch double by Spencer Steer, who has hit safely in seven of his last eight games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"20\">After Tyler Stephenson struck out, Benson cracked his three-run homer, his second in two games. Since his recall from Triple-A Louisville, he has played in six games and has seven hits, four for extra bases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"22\">\u201cWill was dying for an opportunity,\u201d said Francona. \u201cA lot of guys when you send them to the minors, it\u2019s human nature. I don\u2019t want to say pouting, but it\u2019s like getting kicked in the stomach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"23\">\u201cHe did the opposite of that&#8230;he went and played,\u201d Francona added. \u201cNow he is getting the opportunity and trying to make the most of it. He shows up with a good attitude, he\u2019s ready to play, he\u2019s in the right place. It\u2019s been fun to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Explore<a class=\"headline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/sports\/pete-rose-jr-thrilled-about-mlb-decision-but-sad-his-dads-not-here-to-enjoy-it\/KWXM72EDAZETPHPROCTBPQDUII\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pete Rose Jr. thrilled about MLB decision but sad his dad\u2019s not here to enjoy it<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"25\">His reincarnation began in spring training when former Reds star outfielder Eric Davis helped Benson reconstruct his batting stance and his approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"26\">\u201cI thought we did a really good job early,\u201d he said. \u201cWe had some really good at bats and with Benson obviously having the big hit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"27\">While Benson could have said, \u201cI told you so,\u201d or grumbled and groaned about his demotion, that isn\u2019t his disposition, not his make-up, not his personality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"29\">All he does is repeat and repeat about how thankful he is for the opportunity and how thankful he is Francona gave him that opportunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"30\">And that opportunity only came early this week when center fielder TJ Friedl injured his wrist and Benson replaced him. When Friedl was back in the lineup Friday, Benson was in right field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"31\">\u201cI\u2019m just looking for the opportunity to go out there and play every day,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m thankful for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"32\">And there is no \u2018I\u2019 or \u2018me\u2019 when he talks about the team, other than to say, he has no extra incentive to do something magnificent against his old team<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"33\">But said with a smile, \u201cI\u2019ve gotten past the revenge-type feeling. He had a hit and a sacrifice fly during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/sports\/crisp-reds-beat-up-white-sox-snap-3-game-losing-streak\/NLB5CZZPIBBL7GRPW5QAU3KK2Q\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Thursday\u2019s 7-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.<\/a> On Friday, he homered, singled and stole a base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"39\">Hays said he loves close games \u201cBecause everybody gets on their feet and it all comes down to the last strike, like that last-pitch heater Emilio threw up-and-in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"41\">\u201cWe\u2019re really putting our at bats together now,\u201d he added. \u201cWe\u2019re not missing good pitches to hit and hopefully we found a little something and we can keep it rolling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"42\">After losing the first two games at home against the Chicago White Sox and winning the third game, Francona said, \u201cI\u2019m happy we won and we played a crisp game, but we have to back it up tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"43\">They did just that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"44\">\u201cYou know what? Winning is what we showed up to do,\u201d said Francona. \u201cYou know they (the Guardians) are always going to show up to play. We know that.
