CINCINNATI \u2014 David Fry received some good news on Saturday, while Ben Lively was told to keep his fingers crossed.<\/p>\n
Fry, a hero from last year\u2019s postseason, will be assigned to Class AA Akron next week to begin his rehab program from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Fry will be limited to DH and pinch-hitting duties after playing several positions last year for the Guardians. who reached the American League Championship Series.<\/p>\n
Lively is scheduled to visit Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas to get a second opinion on the strained right flexor tendon in his right elbow. Lively left Monday\u2019s start against the Brewers following three scoreless innings with pain in his forearm.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to make sure we check every box and do what\u2019s best for Ben,\u201d said manager Stephen Vogt.<\/p>\n
When asked if surgery was a possibility, Vogt said, \u201cWe just don\u2019t know. We have to go see Dr. Meister and see what he thinks.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fry drove in five runs against the Tigers in the ALDS and gave the Guardians their only win in the ALCS with his 10th inning, two-run, walk-off homer in Game 3 against the Yankees.<\/p>\n

OF Lane Thomas has experienced no problems with his bruised right wrist during his rehab at Columbus. Vogt said Thomas will play at least a few more games for the Clippers.The Guardians are still waiting to get more information on top prospect Travis Bazzana\u2019s right side injury. Bazzana was injured on a swing Wednesday while playing for Class AA Akron.RHP Shane Bieber threw a live bullpen session on Friday, while RHP Trevor Stephan threw one on Saturday. Jose Ramirez has been experimenting with a torpedo bat, but says he won\u2019t use one in a game.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe barrel of the bat is too skinny,\u201d said Ramirez. \u201cI\u2019m not using it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The torpedo bat, which is legal, moves more wood to the middle of the bat, near the sweet spot.<\/p>\n
Torpedo bat or no torpedo bat, Ramirez is hot. Ramirez took a 10-game hitting streak into Saturday night\u2019s game against the Reds. He\u2019s homered in his last three games.<\/p>\n
Vogt moved him back into the No. 2 spot in the lineup for the first time since April 17. He said it was because the Reds started lefty Brent Suter as an opener.<\/p>\n
Ramirez went into the game hitting .387 (12 for 31) against lefties.<\/p>\n
Guardians roots<\/p>\n
Tony Mansolino, Baltimore\u2019s interim manager, has deep Cleveland roots. Mansolino was a coach, manager and instructor for 11 years with the Guardians before the Orioles hired him in 2021 to be their third base coach.<\/p>\n
Mansolino was named interim manager Saturday after the Orioles fired Brandon Hyde. Mansolino served as the Guardians\u2019 third base coach during the 2020 COVID-19 season when Terry Francona couldn\u2019t manage because of medical reasons and third base coach Mike Sarbaugh became the bench coach for acting manager Sandy Alomar.<\/p>\n

Right fielder Will Brennan felt he had a chance to throw out Cincinnati\u2019s Gavin Lux after he caught Tyler Stephenson\u2019s fly ball Friday in the third inning.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had a lot of momentum because I got behind the the ball,\u201d said Brennan. \u201cBut after the ball leaves your hand, you really have to be lucky because it can bounce a lot of different ways.<\/p>\n
