Jackson Merrill was, at one point, part of the talks between the Padres and Angels when they were discussing Ohtani,” said Rosenthal.

With talks failing to progress, the Padres pivoted to Juan Soto and made a blockbuster trade with the Washington Nationals for the superstar. Merrill was part of it,” noted Rosenthal. “Whether he would’ve been part of the final deal, hard to say, we don’t know. The mere fact that they could’ve made that kind of deal for Ohtani, well it just shows that they missed on an opportunity.”

After six seasons with the Angels and failing to make the playoffs despite winning AL MVP twice, Ohtani signed a then record-breaking 10-year, $700 million deal with the Dodgers ahead of the 2024 season. He proceeded to become the first player ever to hit at least 50 home runs and steal 50 bases, win his first NL MVP, and capture a World Series title.

If the Angels had traded Ohtani in 2022, they might not be mired in the AL West basement once again and could instead be looking toward a bright future with Merrill, and possibly Wood, Abrams and Gore.

Related Headlines

The landscape of Major League Baseball could look vastly different today if the Los Angeles Angels had traded…

[2390
291,5,4747,871,565,7575,134,4748,1165,446,3223,774,56,57,3224,3222,12940,771,19,4,1819,12939,18,468,5317,71
0":"post-35993","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-los-angeles-angels","8":"tag-angels","9":"tag-baseball","10":"tag-foul-territory","11":"tag-jackson-merrill","12":"tag-james-wood","13":"tag-jarlin-susana","14":"tag-juan-soto","15":"tag-ken-rosenthal","16":"tag-la","17":"tag-la-angels","18":"tag-laangels","19":"tag-los-angeles","20":"tag-los-angeles-angels","21":"tag-los-angeles-dodgers","22":"tag-losangeles","23":"tag-losangelesangels","24":"tag-luke-voit","25":"tag-mackenzie-gore","26":"tag-major-league-baseball","27":"tag-mlb","28":"tag-national-league-west","29":"tag-robert-hassell","30":"tag-san-diego-padres","31":"tag-shohei-ohtani","32":"tag-the-angels","33":"tag-washington-nationals
["GET
