{"id":37018,"date":"2025-05-18T19:45:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-18T19:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/37018\/"},"modified":"2025-05-18T19:45:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-18T19:45:09","slug":"padres-omg-sign-emerges-after-jose-iglesias-said-it-belongs-to-mets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/37018\/","title":{"rendered":"Padres &#8216;OMG&#8217; sign emerges after Jose Iglesias said it &#8216;belongs&#8217; to Mets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Perhaps the Padres are about to enter their \u201cOMG\u201d era one season after it became an integral piece of the Mets\u2019 magical run.<\/p>\n<p>Before the Padres\u2019 loss to the Mariners on Saturday, television host and reporter Annie Heilbrunn shared a video on X of Jose Iglesias picking up an \u201cOMG\u201d cutout in Padres colors and handing it to someone else on the field wearing team gear.<\/p>\n<p>While that specific sign\u2019s backstory remains unclear, Heilbrunn added in a reply that she believes \u201cthis was a gift from a fan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jose Iglesias is pictured with an \u201cOMG\u201d sign before <br \/>the Padres\u2019 game May 17. Screengrab via X\/@annieheilbrunn<\/p>\n<p>It still served as a strange sight, though, since for the final four months of the 2024 season, those three letters appeared throughout Citi Field and the Mets dugout as the Mets reversed a sinking campaign and ended up two wins shy of a World Series berth.<\/p>\n<p>Iglesias, known as \u201cCandelita\u201d in the music space, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/28\/sports\/jose-iglesias-performs-omg-live-at-citi-field-after-mets-win\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">performed his hit song \u201cOMG\u201d<\/a> \u2014 which reached No. 1 on Billboard\u2019s Latin Digital Song Sales and even got a remix featuring Pitbull \u2014 following a June 28 home game, and when a Mets player would hit a home run, they\u2019d pose with a cutout in the dugout.<\/p>\n<p>They were scattered throughout the stands, too, as Mets fans embraced the journeyman infielder, who began the year on a minor-league deal before hitting .337 across 85 regular-season games.<\/p>\n<p>The three letters became synonymous with their run.<\/p>\n<p>Iglesias\u2019 presence in the lineup did, too.<\/p>\n<p>Jose Iglesias celebrates after the Mets clinched the NLDS against the Phillies. Carlos Toro for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>But there wasn\u2019t a reunion for 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The Mets didn\u2019t pursue Iglesias in the offseason, instead trying to create opportunities for younger players instead of signing the 35-year-old Iglesias to another deal.<\/p>\n<p>Iglesias said he was \u201ctotally shocked\u201d by that development that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/05\/sports\/mets-omg-hero-jose-iglesias-signing-with-padres\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allowed him to sign with the Padres<\/a>, though he said that the \u201cOMG\u201d hype and memories belong to his former team in Queens.<\/p>\n<p>Jose Iglesias scores a run during the Padres\u2019 game against the Rockies on May 10. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018OMG\u2019 belongs to the Mets,\u201d Iglesias <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/07\/sports\/jose-iglesias-has-a-new-mets-dream-after-disappointing-breakup\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said when San Diego was in New York<\/a> earlier this month to face the Yankees. \u201cIt\u2019s a song for everybody to listen to obviously, but \u2018OMG\u2019 is the Mets.
