So we\u2019ll look into that as we get into the rehab process,\u201d Gomes said. \u201cAnd like we do with everything, let\u2019s keep the big picture in mind, with the goal of playing through October.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taking such a long view has become an annual practice for the Dodgers. Their collection of star talent and organizational depth means they are almost always in position to make the playoffs. It has afforded them leeway to manage players\u2019 regular-season workloads and recovery from injuries with an eye toward having them at full strength come the fall.<\/p>\n<p>It was a balance the team struck well this past season, navigating a wave of regular-season pitching injuries to have their rotation fully healthy to spearhead their postseason run.<\/p>\n<p>Next season, however, the difficulty of that task could be significantly amplified.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Their already aging roster will be another year older. The after-effects of playing 33 extra games the past two Octobers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-09-26\/dodgers-ws-hangover\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:will be acutely felt;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">will be acutely felt<\/a>. The stress \u2014 both mental, physical, emotional \u2014 it&#8217;s just on a whole \u2018nother level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The big question in 2026 will be how the Dodgers\u2019 pitching bounces back from this October\u2019s heavy workload. All four of their top starters (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-11-02\/dodgers-yoshinobu-yamamoto-world-series-game-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Yoshinobu Yamamoto;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Yoshinobu Yamamoto<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-10-13\/dodgers-nlcs-game-1-blake-snell-freddie-freeman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Blake Snell;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Blake Snell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-10-09\/tyler-glasnow-dodgers-nlds-game-4-phillies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tyler Glasnow;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Tyler Glasnow<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-10-17\/shohei-ohtani-three-home-runs-dodgers-brewers-nlcs-game-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Shohei Ohtani;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Shohei Ohtani<\/a>) threw more than 20 postseason innings and worked either out of the bullpen and\/or on short rest. Yamamoto logged a whopping 37 \u2153 innings between his two complete games and heroic back-to-back performances in Games 6 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-11-01\/dodgers-defeat-toronto-blue-jays-game-7-comeback\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:7 of the World Series;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">7 of the World Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Typically, that kind of mileage can have adverse effects the following season.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that the Dodgers have depth. They could run a six-man rotation of Yamamoto, Snell, Glasnow, Ohtani, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-10-10\/roki-sasaki-transformation-dodgers-playoff-hero-phillies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Roki Sasaki;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Roki Sasaki<\/a> (who will return to starting pitching duties after his stint as a reliever at the end of last year) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-06-18\/emmet-sheehan-will-smith-dodgers-padres-recap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Emmet Sheehan;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Emmet Sheehan<\/a>. They have other young arms capable of providing innings as well, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2024-10-28\/dodgers-ben-casparius-erin-matson-unc-field-hockey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ben Casparius;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Ben Casparius<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-11-01\/dodgers-tyler-glasnow-justin-wrobleski-world-series\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Justin Wrobleski;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Justin Wrobleski<\/a> to the return of Gavin Stone and River Ryan from injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlaying this deep, guys did things that most people don\u2019t do in the World Series, so it\u2019s just making sure we\u2019re being prudent on the front end and saying, \u2018If we need extra rest here, we can do it,\u2019\u201d Gomes said. \u201cWe have ways to navigate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, complications loom \u2014 starting with the triennial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2023-03-15\/full-coverage-2023-world-baseball-classic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:World Baseball Classic;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">World Baseball Classic<\/a> scheduled for next March.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-11-13\/dodgers-trade-market-mlb-offseason-free-agency?utm_source=yahoo&amp;utm_medium=promo_module&amp;utm_campaign=rss_feed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Why trade market could appeal to Dodgers, and help them weigh short and long-term goals;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Why trade market could appeal to Dodgers, and help them weigh short and long-term goals<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nine current Dodgers participated in the event\u2019s 2023 edition, and several more could be candidates for next spring\u2019s tournament. The most intriguing names on that list are the club\u2019s Japanese trio of Yamamoto, Ohtani and Sasaki, who will be expected to star for their home country as it tries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2023-03-21\/world-baseball-classic-final-game-shohei-ohtani-recap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:defend its 2023 title;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">defend its 2023 title<\/a> in the international event.<\/p>\n<p>Some pitchers in their situations might sit out the WBC, or pitch with strict workload limitations coming off the kind of strenuous stretch they experienced in the playoffs \u2014 not to mention the shoulder injury that sidelined Sasaki for much of the year. But the tournament\u2019s significance in Japan (where it is held in even higher standing than the World Series) would make any sort of limitations on their availability a culturally controversial development \u2014 and leave the Dodgers in a potentially tricky position if they were to try to push for any of them to prioritize extra rest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t gotten into WBC stuff yet,\u201d Gomes said. \u201cI\u2019m sure we\u2019ll be getting those asks in soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Ohtani himself presents another question for next regular season, as he embarks on what will be his first full-time season as a two-way player since 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Though Gomes said Ohtani\u2019s pitching plan will \u201cprobably look more like a normal schedule than last year\u201d \u2014 when he slowly built up in his return from a second career Tommy John surgery, and didn\u2019t make full-length starts until the end of the season \u2014 he also said Ohtani\u2019s usage could be somewhat \u201cfluid,\u201d leaving the door open to some flexibility with his schedule as he also balances his designated hitting duties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything we\u2019ll do is with a big-picture mindset,\u201d Gomes reiterated. \u201cSo those are conversations we\u2019ll have as we get closer [to next season].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There could be similar conversations with some of the club\u2019s older stars. By the end of next October, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-10-28\/dodgers-freddie-freeman-walk-off-longest-world-series-game\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Freddie Freeman;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Freddie Freeman<\/a> will be 37, Muncy will be 36, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-09-03\/dodgers-teoscar-hernandez-want-to-see-that-edge\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Teoscar Hern\u00e1ndez;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Teoscar Hern\u00e1ndez<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-10-03\/dodgers-mookie-betts-hitting-struggles-shortstop\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mookie Betts;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Mookie Betts<\/a> both 34, Ohtani 32, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-08-13\/dodgers-angels-shaikin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Will Smith;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Will Smith<\/a> and Edman 31. Most of them have nursed injuries over the past couple of seasons. But will they be willing to do another long-term deal?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like our guys take really good care of themselves, so they might not be quite the same aging curve as everyone just with their level of hunger and their commitment in the offseason,\u201d Gomes said. \u201cBut I think there&#8217;s the give and take of \u2026 making sure we maintain a good group of young guys that are ready to come up and fill holes when necessary.
