{"id":48547,"date":"2025-05-23T11:30:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T11:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/48547\/"},"modified":"2025-05-23T11:30:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T11:30:10","slug":"luke-weaver-dominates-for-third-straight-day-in-yankees-rarity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/48547\/","title":{"rendered":"Luke Weaver dominates for third straight day in Yankees&#8217; rarity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Luke Weaver changed teams four times in between the last two occasions the Yankees asked a pitcher to work three straight days during the regular season.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it\u2019s been a long time.<\/p>\n<p>The journeyman-turned-lockdown closer recorded the final three outs of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/22\/sports\/carlos-rodon-yankees-bullpen-shut-out-rangers-to-finish-sweep\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 1-0 victory against the Rangers<\/a> on Thursday to finish off a series sweep in which he earned a win and two saves while throwing just 18 total pitches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a lot less stressful when you can just get them out quicker,\u201d Weaver said.<\/p>\n<p>Manager Aaron Boone last asked a reliever (Aroldis Chapman) to pitch for a third straight regular-season day Sept. 15, 2021. That was in the middle of a playoff race \u2014 when Weaver still was toiling for the Diamondbacks \u2014 and not a run-of-the-mill May series, so why did Boone break his rules?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a couple days off before, and two nights ago was two pitches,\u201d Boone said. \u201cWith the low volume there, it was going to be a save-only situation today. Robert Sabo \/ New York Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing efficient sometimes is really good, but it also allows you to be available,\u201d Weaver said. \u201cI think there are moments where you have to make sure that, just because you didn\u2019t throw a ton of pitches doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that you are 100 percent. It was one of those discussions where it was like, \u2018Unless you tell us different, what do you want to do?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees bullpen is without Fernando Cruz, who is headed to the injured list. Ian Hamilton had pitched back-to-back days. Robert Sabo \/ New York Post<\/p>\n<p>He shaved his ERA to a minuscule 0.40 with his 18-pitch series.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s pretty impressive,\u201d Carlos Rod\u00f3n said after earning the win with six scoreless innings. \u201cEfficient. Just getting ahead of guys and dominant. Same as last year. He\u2019s been so great for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weaver reclaimed the closer role from Devin Williams, whose struggles have lessened as a setup man. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>He does not feel a need to gas up his strikeout numbers like some closers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about trying to get to strike one as fast as possible,\u201d Weaver said. \u201cI don\u2019t necessarily want to get to two strikes every time.
