The Cleveland Guardians<\/a>‘ roster is a work in progress.<\/p>\n

That’s not any more clear than in their latest roster move, where they’d designated for assignment a pitcher they just got from the Toronto Blue Jays<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The newly DFA’d pitcher is left-handed Justin Bruihl.<\/p>\n

Cleveland just traded for Bruihl from the Blue Jays within the last week, but his roster spot came into jeopardy when the Guardians signed right-handed reliever Shawn Armstrong.<\/p>\n

When the Guardians officially announced Armstrong’s signing, they also announced that Bruihl has been designated for assignment.<\/p>\n

A DFA means that Bruihl is on waivers. He can be claimed by another team.<\/p>\n

If Bruihl clears waivers, he can remain in the Cleveland organization and just won’t be on the 40-man roster anymore. In that case, he’d likely open the new season at Triple-A.<\/p>\n

Bruihl wasn’t a guarantee to make the MLB roster by any means, but it’s still a bit surprising to see Cleveland immediately expose him to a potential waiver claim so soon after they got him.<\/p>\n

But that’s how things work on the fringes of the roster in the offseason. If something better comes along, that can end up winning.<\/p>\n
