{"id":507834,"date":"2026-01-06T13:08:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T13:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/507834\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T13:08:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T13:08:12","slug":"red-sox-get-surprise-alex-bregman-bo-bichette-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/507834\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Sox Get Surprise Alex Bregman-Bo Bichette Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While it isn\u2019t exactly Coca Cola vs. Pepsi, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/2025\/12\/should-red-sox-sign-alex-bregman-or-blue-jays-bo-bichette\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Bregman-Bo Bichette debate<\/a> rages amid some surprising developments for the Boston Red Sox.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no secret chief baseball officer <a href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/2026\/01\/mlb-insider-says-red-sox-among-most-improved-teams-this-offseason\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Craig Breslow<\/a> wants to add a power bat to the lineup.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also no secret the Red Sox remain linked to both <a href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/2026\/01\/mlb-network-reacts-to-new-red-sox-alex-bregman-rumors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bregman<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/2026\/01\/mlb-insider-links-bo-bichette-to-national-league-contender\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bichette<\/a>, the two-time All-Star shortstop from the Toronto Blue Jays.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s believed the Blue Jays aren\u2019t hot to trot for either player after signing Japanese third baseman <a href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/2026\/01\/blue-jays-continue-hot-offseason-agree-to-terms-with-kazuma-okamoto\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kazuma Okamoto<\/a> to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/kazuma-okamoto-blue-jays-deal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four-year, $60 million contract<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not so fast, my friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nesn-in-content-ad__copy\">Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Blue Jays remain fully engaged in talks with infielders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bichebo01.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bo Bichette<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bregmal01.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Bregman<\/a>, with outfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/player\/kyle-tucker-663656\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Tucker<\/a> also remaining a possibility,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/mlb\/columnist\/bob-nightengale\/2026\/01\/05\/mlb-trade-rumors-top-free-agents-winter\/88024143007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">USA Today\u2019s Bob Nightengale<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>The MLB insider says the Red Sox remain \u201cthe favorite\u201d for Bregman.<\/p>\n<p>However the<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FoulTerritoryTV\/status\/2008245864897409396\" rel=\"nofollow\"> \u201cFoul Territory\u201d podcast<\/a> has a different take, thanks to former big-league general manager Jim Bowden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nesn-in-content-ad__copy\">Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Blue Jays told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JimBowdenGM\" rel=\"nofollow\">@JimBowdenGM<\/a>\u00a0that signing Kazuma Okamoto doesn\u2019t take them out of the race for Kyle Tucker or Bo Bichette, but it does for Alex Bregman. \u2018It takes them out of doing both Tucker and Bichette, but it doesn\u2019t take them out of doing one or the other.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for Boston, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/01\/some-things-i-think-i-think-red-sox-had-better-have-one-big-move-left-to-offseason.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Masslive.com\u2019s Sean McAdam<\/a> says what everyone is thinking.<\/p>\n<p id=\"CY435LQVC5FNFJKSDM6IY5LJPQ\">\u201cEither way, the Sox need to lengthen their lineup with a significant run-producing bat. Bregman also offers improved defense and a considerable off-field presence; Bichette is younger, puts the ball in play, and hits all kind of pitching,\u201d McAdam writes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nesn-in-content-ad__copy\">Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p id=\"LSGBN2OQVBE6RF4362XCFLFUSM\">\u201cOne or the other has to get done. Otherwise, the Red Sox consign themselves to the middle of the pack in the American League and will have wasted a prime opportunity,\u201d McAdam concludes.<\/p>\n<p>So does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/01\/26-red-sox-predictions-for-2026-including-big-trades-a-roman-anthony-breakout-and-a-no-hitter-chris-cotillo.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Masslive.com\u2019s Chris Cotillo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw a year ago that big additions can happen in mid-February, and while it might not take that long for Breslow this time around, it\u2019s clear he still wants to add a significant bat before Opening Day,\u201d Cotillo says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nesn-in-content-ad__copy\">Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe top two fits at this point appear to be two free agents (Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette) but it\u2019ll likely come down to whether or not the Red Sox are willing to get uncomfortable with contract length. If neither of those guys signs, where would they pivot?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/01\/some-things-i-think-i-think-red-sox-had-better-have-one-big-move-left-to-offseason.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">It feels like a necessity to add either Bregman or Bichette<\/a>,\u201d Cotillo notes.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>So where do things stand with Bregman?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Red Sox remain engaged with Bregman and his agents at Boras Corporation, sources said Saturday, but are also assessing potential alternatives as they have been all winter,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/01\/red-sox-rival-signs-japanese-star-and-it-could-help-bostons-chances-of-alex-bregman-reunion.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cotillo reports<\/a>. \u201cOne is longtime Blue Jay Bo Bichette, whose path back to Toronto isn\u2019t blocked by the Okamoto move. Bregman and Bichette are the top two infielders remaining on the free agent market. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nesn-in-content-ad__copy\">Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Friday,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gingersnaphyde\/status\/2007154918180958437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ESPN\u2019s Buster Olney reported<\/a>\u00a0the Red Sox had<a href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/2026\/01\/red-sox-made-aggressive-offer-to-free-agent-two-time-world-series-champion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> \u2018an aggressive offer\u2019 <\/a>out to Bregman, who is thought to be prioritizing length of deal after settling for a short-term market a year ago,\u201d Cotillo says.<\/p>\n<p>However the Red Sox aren\u2019t the only club chasing Bregman. Nightengale reports the Chicago Cubs remain in the mix for the three-time All-Star third baseman.<\/p>\n<p>Should Boston pivot to Bichette, it will find a crowded market for the right-handed bat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nesn-in-content-ad__copy\">Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Phillies are among a number of big-market teams to have interest in Bo Bichette, an ultra young (27) free agent,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JonHeyman\/status\/2007591566236627201\" rel=\"nofollow\">New York Post\u2019s Jon Heyman<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYanks, Cubs, Dodgers, Red Sox and incumbent Jays, too.
