Sweet home Chicago? The Athletic\u2019s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon<\/a> report the Cubs, like the Boston Red Sox, are in the market<\/a> for third baseman Alex Bregman<\/a> and shortstop Bo Bichette.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs are among the teams talking to both players, according to people briefed on the conversations,\u201d Rosenthal and Sammon write.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Blue Jays have been in touch with both, too, but now\u00a0appear more focused on (Kyle) Tucker<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Cubs\u2019 interest in Bichette, first\u00a0reported by Jon Heyman<\/a>, stems from their desire to upgrade at third base \u2013 something the signing of Bregman also would accomplish,\u201d Rosenthal and Sammon add.<\/p>\n

The Red Sox have not hidden their desire to re-sign Bregman, with Bichette seemingly in the mix as a backup. And Boston isn\u2019t the only club preferring Bregman over Bichette.<\/p>\n

\u201cBregman, who turns 32 in March, is four years older than Bichette, but a number of teams view his leadership as a difference-maker,\u201d Rosenthal and Sammon note.<\/p>\n

According to ESPN\u2019s Buster Olney<\/a>,\u00a0during an appearance on \u201cFirst Up with Korolnek & Colaiacovo\u201d on Friday<\/a>, the Red Sox have made an \u201caggressive offer\u201d to Bregman.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe details of the offer are still unknown, but Bregman is thought to be seeking a six-year deal,\u201d The Athletic\u2019s Jen McCaffrey<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut for now, the sides sit at a stalemate: the Red Sox seemingly satisfied with their current offer and Bregman likely holding out for more,\u201d McCaffrey adds.<\/p>\n

\u201cBregman has control here, given the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers are all in the mix for his services, though Boston has long been the favorite to re-sign him,\u201d McCaffrey concludes.<\/p>\n

In his first season with the Red Sox, Bregman earned his third All-Star nod while hitting .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games<\/a>. But he missed almost two months<\/a> of the season with a quad injury.<\/p>\n

Bichette, 27, put together a strong 2025 campaign for the Toronto Blue Jays. His .311 batting average was second in the majors<\/a>. The two-time All-Star owns a .294 lifetime batting average and has led the American League in base hits twice<\/a> (2021 and 2022).<\/p>\n

Of course, the Red Sox signing Bichette would come with a kicker:\u00a0robbing an\u00a0American League East<\/a>\u00a0rival of a core player that helped the Blue Jays\u00a0win the division title<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0advance to the 2025 World Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sweet home Chicago?
