At first glance, the news that the Marlins traded<\/a> right-hander Edward Cabrera<\/a> to the Cubs for a package of prospects sounds promising for Red Sox Nation. <\/p>\n

After all, by sending him to Chicago, Miami made sure Cabrera didn\u2019t land with the New York Yankees, who were in the market for the 27-year-old.<\/p>\n

Upon closer inspection however, it\u2019s possible the Cabrera deal could damage Boston\u2019s chances of signing third baseman Alex Bregman<\/a> or shortstop Bo Bichette.<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the Cubs were going to target an impact bat\u00a0and\u00a0add to the rotation, this was a great way to make that more realistic,\u201d MLB.com\u2019s Jordan Bastian<\/a> reports. \u201cBy landing a pitcher still in his arbitration years (Cabrera is under control through 2028), the Cubs may have solved their need for an impact arm without breaking the bank in free agency.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe savings on that front could allow Chicago\u2019s front office to be a little more aggressive in pursuing a bat,\u201d Bastian adds. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Cubs have been linked to\u00a0Alex Bregman<\/a>\u00a0two offseasons in a row now, and recent reports have them at least keeping tabs on the market for\u00a0Bo Bichette<\/a>. Now, Chicago could, in theory, add to the position-player group without going over the first Competitive Balance Tax threshold ($244 million),\u201d Bastian concludes.<\/p>\n

The Athletic\u2019s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon<\/a>\u00a0report the Cubs, like the Red Sox, are in the market for Bregman and Bichette.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs are among the teams talking to both players, according to people briefed on the conversations,\u201d Rosenthal and Sammon write.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Blue Jays have been in touch with both, too, but now\u00a0appear more focused on (Kyle) Tucker<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Cubs\u2019 interest in Bichette, first\u00a0reported by Jon Heyman<\/a>, stems from their desire to upgrade at third base \u2013 something the signing of Bregman also would accomplish,\u201d Rosenthal and Sammon add.<\/p>\n

\u201cBregman, who turns 32 in March, is four years older than Bichette, but a number of teams view his leadership as a difference-maker,\u201d Rosenthal and Sammon note.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0ESPN\u2019s Buster Olney<\/a>,\u00a0during an appearance on \u201cFirst Up with Korolnek & Colaiacovo\u201d on Friday<\/a>, the Red Sox have made an \u201caggressive offer\u201d to Bregman.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe details of the offer are still unknown, but Bregman is thought to be seeking a six-year deal,\u201d\u00a0The Athletic\u2019s Jen McCaffrey<\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut for now, the sides sit at a stalemate: the Red Sox seemingly satisfied with their current offer and Bregman likely holding out for more,\u201d McCaffrey adds.<\/p>\n

\u201cBregman has control here, given the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers are all in the mix for his services, though Boston has long been the favorite to re-sign him,\u201d McCaffrey concludes.<\/p>\n

In his first season with the Red Sox, Bregman earned his third All-Star nod while\u00a0hitting .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games<\/a>.
