You\u2019re supposed to be happy when your team scores 19 runs. But in the midst of the Red Sox<\/a> 19-5 drubbing of the Orioles yesterday<\/a>, third baseman and early season MVP candidate Alex Bregman left the game with quad tightness. Fortunately, he didn\u2019t sounds too worried about it after the game yesterday, but we\u2019ll likely hear more about it today. (Rob Bradford, WEEI)<\/a><\/p>\n

So with an injury to the new starting third baseman, naturally attention turned to the old starting third baseman, Rafael Devers. <\/p>\n

But manager Alex Cora was asked after the game about Bregman replacements and did not mention the name of his star DH, saying that it would be Nick Sogard who mans the position in the short-term. Cora specifically said that neither Kristian Campbell nor David Hamilton would be considered for third in the time being, due to their inexperience with the position. (Tim Crowley, NESN)<\/a><\/p>\n

Of course inexperience with the position didn\u2019t stop Cora from running out position player Abraham Toro to pitch last night, a move that Cora admits he hates making. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)<\/a><\/p>\n

With an infield injury on their hands, naturally people started wondering whether it might be Marcelo Mayer\u2019s time. But it is Roman Anthony who has really been earning that promotion lately. Anthony just went through his first \u201cslump\u201d at AAA this year, as he went 12 straight games without an extra base hit while hitting .283 and reaching base at least once in 11 of those 12 games. And if you\u2019re still wondering what\u2019s going to happen at first base, especially if Nick Sogard needs to move across the diamond for a spell, Alex Cora said that the Red Sox still \u201chaven\u2019t closed the door\u201d on Devers getting playing time there at some point.
