The Chicago Cubs<\/a> signed a pitcher Monday who once was viewed as a top prospect but now is a total flier.<\/p>\n

The pitcher: Tyler Beede.<\/p>\n

Beede’s signing was reported by Ari Alexander<\/a>, and it’s a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.<\/p>\n

He entered pro baseball back in the 2014 MLB Draft out of Vanderbilt as the No. 14 overall pick by the San Francisco Giants<\/a>. He had actually been a first-round pick in 2011 by the Blue Jays, too, but had not signed and instead went to school.<\/p>\n

He made his MLB debut in 2018 and spent portions of four seasons at the big league level with the Giants.<\/p>\n

He then pitched in a partial season with the Pirates, went to Japan in 2023, then pitched for the Guardians in 2024.<\/p>\n

Beede didn’t pitch in the majors at all in 2025.<\/p>\n

His career MLB ERA is 5.55 with an 8.1 strikeouts per nine innings ratio.<\/p>\n

Beede is 32 years old and spent the 2025 season in a few different places.<\/p>\n

He began in Triple-A with St. Paul (Twins organization) and had an 8.00 ERA in seven outings.<\/p>\n

He then pitched for Long Island in the independent Atlantic League and had a 5.48 ERA in five starts.<\/p>\n

From there, he went to the Mexican League and had a 7.43 ERA in three starts.<\/p>\n

So it’s not obvious Beede still has anything left in the tank, but the Cubs are giving him a shot.<\/p>\n
