{"id":518266,"date":"2026-01-13T14:26:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T14:26:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/518266\/"},"modified":"2026-01-13T14:26:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T14:26:16","slug":"colorado-rockies-news-is-troy-johnston-part-of-the-rockies-answer-at-first-base","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/518266\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorado Rockies news: Is Troy Johnston (part of) the Rockies\u2019 answer at first base?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">If there\u2019s been a recurring question at Purple Row this offseason, it\u2019s been this one: Who will play first base for the Colorado Rockies in 2026?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/rockies-news\/78359\/who-could-the-rockies-realistically-sign-to-play-first-base\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Skyler Timmins has speculated<\/a> about possible free-agent fits, but perhaps it\u2019s worth considering if the Rockies already have their 1B on the roster in Troy Johnston, a player they <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1734621&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mlb.com%2Fnews%2Ftroy-johnston-claimed-waivers-rockies%3Fadobe_mc%3DTS%253D1766702962%257CMCMID%253D28282484438008642775340819210741314687%257CMCORGID%253DA65F776A5245B01B0A490D44%40AdobeOrg%26affiliateId%3Dmlbapp-ios_webview_news-index%26rsid%3Dmlbios.at.bat.new.implementation\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">claimed from the Miami Marlins<\/a> on November 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">What might Johnston bring to the Rockies?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">A native of Puyallup, Washington, the 28-year-old lefty was an all-around high school athlete (football, wrestling \u2014 which his father coached \u2014 and baseball). In an odd twist, he and Toglia were both elite Washington State baseball contemporaries in high school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">While Toglia opted to attend UCLA, Johnston headed for <a href=\"https:\/\/gozags.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/troy-johnston\/2475\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gonzaga University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201dMy grandparents have lived four blocks away from campus since I have been alive, so I have grown up around Gonzaga,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/gozags.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/troy-johnston\/2475\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Johnston said<\/a> at the time. (He was an accounting major.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Due to a hand injury, Johnston had a terrible 2018 and missed much of the season, but he finished 2019 slashing .330\/.402\/.610 with 10 homers. In his career with the Bulldogs between 2017-2019, Johnston accrued a .312\/.386\/.515 slashline, including 13 home runs and 27 doubles. His college FLD% was .984. In 212 innings, he had two errors and five assists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">His professional baseball career began in 2019 when he was <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1734621&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mlb.com%2Fmilb%2Fprospects%2F2022%2Fmarlins%2Ftroy-johnston-687859\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drafted in the 19th round by the Miami Marlins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Although he played some low-A ball in 2019, because of COVID, his professional career, effectively, did not begin until 2021, but Johnston found success in the Marlins minor league system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">In 2023, he was their Minor League Player of the Year. In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1734621&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mlb.com%2Fmilb%2Fprospects%2F2022%2Fmarlins%2Ftroy-johnston-687859\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MLB Pipeline wrote<\/a> of Johnston\u2019s season:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">Johnston is a professional hitter who knows his left-handed stroke, repeatedly makes good swing decisions and consistently barrels the ball to all fields. While he has enough bat speed and strength for at least average power, his swing is relatively flat and geared more for line drives than flyballs that will carry over the fence. He is a gifted hitter, so he could make the adjustments to turn on and lift more pitches to produce enough pop to profile as a regular at first base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">He started 2025 in Triple-A Jacksonville where over 84 games, he slashed 252\/.333\/.439, including 12 home runs, 39 RBI, and 31 stolen bases. Johnston finished his MiLB career with a .280\/.365\/.447 slashline that included 82 home runs and 83 stolen bases. In addition, he racked up more than 4300 innings at first base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">On July 29, 2025, he was added to the 40-man roster and promoted to the Marlins. Following that, on August 16, he hit his first home run off Brayan Bello.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">When the 2025 season ended, Johnston had a slashline of .277\/.331\/.420 (107 OPS+) with four home runs and two stolen bases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Also worth noting is that when the Marlins visited Coors Field on September 17-18, he went 3-for-7 with an RBI. So not bad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">In 121 plate appearances over 44 games (so, small sample size), Johnston earned a 6.6% BB% and 21.5% K%. He also had a 40.7% HardHit%. (To watch some of his season highlights with the Marlins, click <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wB8iigU1QCY?si=_qMBrgg3q8YPSgiR\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Defensively, he played 108 innings at first for the Marlins and finished with 0 DRS, FRV, and OAA as well as 0 errors. In other words, he was fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">It\u2019s not clear who in the Rockies front office claimed Johnston (because Paul DePodesta\u2019s hiring as president of baseball operations had not yet been made public).<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But given the Rockies\u2019 needs at first base \u2014 at least until Charlie Condon is ready \u2014 it makes sense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Johnston would be an inexpensive player since he has less than a year of service time. (The league average was 30.5%.) In addition, his LD% is second only to Ezequiel Tovar\u2019s. (The league average was 23.9%.)
