AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Palo Duro baseball standout Jabrelyn Wilson made his college dreams official by signing his National Letter of Intent to continue his career at Bethany College.<\/p>\n
In a packed room, Wilson signed to take his talents to Lindsborg, Kansas, to play for the Swedes.<\/p>\n
Over the course of his career, Wilson has been a versatile presence on the diamond, seeing action in multiple positions and earning all-district honors as an outfielder, utility player and second baseman for the Dons.<\/p>\n
Coach praises Wilson\u2019s character and leadership<\/p>\n
Palo Duro head coach Tyson Wormsbaker praised Wilson as one of the most influential players in the program\u2019s history.<\/p>\n
\u201cJabrelyn Wilson is just a fantastic young man. He\u2019s one of the greatest students and just people I\u2019ve ever been around as a coach and a teacher in my 21 years as doing this,\u201d the Wormsbaker said.<\/p>\n
The coach said Wilson has lifted the program since his freshman year.<\/p>\n
\u201cJabrelyn has, from day one, has came in and just lifted our program up from the very start. Even as a freshman, he earned his way on the varsity and became a starting left fielder and an infielder,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Selfless attitude defines Wilson\u2019s approach<\/p>\n
The coach highlighted Wilson\u2019s team-first mentality.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe does whatever he needs to do to help the team win. He\u2019s not selfish in any way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Wilson was recently named team captain, an honor the coach has only bestowed twice in 21 years.<\/p>\n
\u201cAbout a month or two ago, I decided to name him captain of the team, which I\u2019ve only done twice in my 21 years as a coach. Named the captain, but he is one of those that has deserved it,\u201d the coach said.<\/p>\n
The coach said Wilson\u2019s leadership extends beyond the field.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe coaches the kids like a coach. He supports the kids like a mentor and a friend. He\u2019s just all about making the team the best it can be and our family the best it can be. He is so selfless in that way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Campus visit influences decision<\/p>\n
Wilson said he chose to become a Swede because of the welcoming environment from the campus and coaches.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had a visit back in October, we went during their Little Swedish Festival, the town was real welcoming, I like how the college is, everything is in walking distance, it\u2019s roughly about 800 students,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n
Wilson said the coach\u2019s dedication impressed him during the recruiting process.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhenever I spoke to the coach, the coach was real welcoming, he showed me his dedication on how much he really wanted me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Credits high school coaching staff<\/p>\n
Wilson credited his high school coaching staff, saying their guidance and direction during his time at Palo Duro helped shape and develop him as a player going into the next level.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to thank all my coaches, Coach Wormsbaker, Coach Salmon, and Coach Love, they\u2019ve put all their time into me I can really say,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cI remember stepping in as a freshman, trying to fight for my opportunity to play and I\u2019ve been a varsity starter ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n
