Weathers, the 26-year-old son of former Yankees hurler David Weathers, fittingly said he learned of the trade shortly after completing an offseason bullpen session.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m feeling great. The bullpen the other day is the best I\u2019ve probably felt in a year and a half. I feel really healthy,\u201d Weathers said Thursday on a Zoom call. \u201cI really did a dive and worked \u2026 on figuring out how to lengthen my lat out and lengthen my back out.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe really adjusted a lot of my lifting patterns, we really adjusted my mobility and my prep work. And I think my arm is reaping the benefits right now and I\u2019m just excited to see where the season goes.\u201d<\/p>\n
With Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rod\u00f3n and Clarke Schmidt recuperating from injuries, Weathers will get a chance to earn a spot at the back end of the Yankees starting rotation in April alongside Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil and Will Warren.<\/p>\n
Weathers began last season on the IL with the flexor strain before making his season debut May 14 with five innings of one-run ball against the Cubs. <\/p>\n
He lasted just five starts before landing on the shelf again in early June with the strained lat, missing three more months before returning for three September outings.<\/p>\n
But the Yankees obviously saw enough potential in the hard-throwing southpaw to swing the deal following a relatively quiet offseason.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just looking forward to putting the pinstripes on. It\u2019s an incredible honor when an organization of this caliber wants me to pitch for them. It\u2019s an unbelievable honor,\u201d Weathers said. \u201cI had just finished up my bullpen, and I got back to the house, and I have a little travel sauna. So I was in the sauna \u2026 and I literally probably sat on my couch for two seconds and I got a phone call from [Marlins president] Peter Bendix that I had been traded to the Yankees and then everything kind of ensued from there.<\/p>\n
\u201cI talked to [Yankees GM Brian] Cashman, I talked to Boonie [manager Aaron Boone], and just pure shock. Like, I couldn\u2019t believe that the New York Yankees were a team that I could ever play for, so I\u2019m really excited.\u201d<\/p>\n
David Weathers\u2019 19-year MLB career featured a brief two-season stop with the Yankees, joining Joe Torre\u2019s squad in a trade-deadline deal with the Marlins for pitcher Mark Hutton in 1996 en route to the World Series title. <\/p>\n

He was traded to Cleveland the following June for outfielder Chad Curtis.<\/p>\n
Ryan Weathers was not born until 1999, so most of his memories growing up around the game came during his dad\u2019s six years with the Reds from 2005-09.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, we\u2019ve kind of had weird, similar paths to how we got to New York, both going from the Marlins to the Yankees,\u201d Ryan Weathers said. \u201cHe still says in \u201996, when he got that big punch-out [of Braves catcher Javy Lopez in Game 6 of the World Series], it was the loudest he\u2019s ever heard Yankee Stadium.\u201d<\/p>\n
Weathers, who has posted a 3.74 ERA in 24 starts for the Marlins over the past two seasons, now will get the chance to be a part of the team trying to get the Yanks back to the World Series to try to earn the organization\u2019s first championship since 2009.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Asked what pitching adjustments Boone and pitching coach Matt Blake have told him to expect to make, Weathers replied \u201cprobably more of a usage adjustment\u201d to utilize his two-seam fastball more to open up the strike zone for his four-seamer and his sweeper.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhatever the Yankees want me to do, my job is to throw the baseball whenever they give it to me in whatever capacity that is for however long that is,\u201d Weathers said. \u201cSo I\u2019m just looking forward to learning from these guys. You look at the rotation, you look at the bullpen guys, there\u2019s no excuse for me not to pick their brains and learn from some of the best.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd obviously the pinstripes, the Yankees, obviously, [are] the Yankees. It\u2019s just a cool environment. I\u2019ve liked playing there on the road. I got to play there with San Diego and with Miami. I love the environment there. I love the fans and how into the game they are. It\u2019s the big leagues.
