{"id":523095,"date":"2026-01-16T07:17:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T07:17:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/523095\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T07:17:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T07:17:19","slug":"diamondbacks-make-veteran-arm-their-1st-bullpen-addition-of-offseason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/523095\/","title":{"rendered":"Diamondbacks make veteran arm their 1st bullpen addition of offseason"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/baseball\/mlb\/teams\/arizona-diamondbacks\/253\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Diamondbacks;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Diamondbacks<\/a> signed right-hander Taylor Clarke to a one-year, $1.55 million deal on Thursday, Jan. 15, making the veteran reliever their first addition to the bullpen this offseason.<\/p>\n<p>Clarke, 32, posted a solid 3.25 ERA in 55\u2153 innings for the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/baseball\/mlb\/teams\/kansas-city-royals\/231\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Kansas City Royals;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Kansas City Royals<\/a> last season. He did not strike out many batters (44) but did not walk many (nine), either.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen said the club sees Clarke as a versatile relief option.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was very consistent,\u201d Hazen said. \u201cHe had a really good second half. We feel like he pounds the strike zone. We think he could fit into that longer role, multiple-inning, one-plus role. We feel like there\u2019s versatility there. Obviously, we know the makeup and have a long history with him. That\u2019s an easier answer,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not sure what we\u2019ll have access to in that way. I think if we continue to build out talent in the bullpen, this bullpen is going to be good in time as we move through the season. We\u2019re going to obviously be getting guys back as we move through the season, so I think the talent is naturally going to improve as we move through the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bullpen was a major trouble spot last season for the Diamondbacks, who were unable to overcome injuries to relievers Justin Martinez, A.J. Puk and others. Puk is expected back sometime in the season\u2019s first couple of months while Martinez is likely to return sometime in the second half. Both underwent elbow procedures last year.<\/p>\n<p>Clarke\u2019s signing amounts to a homecoming. He was drafted by the Diamondbacks in 2015 and debuted in the majors with them four years later.
