\n\tThe Miami Marlins are unafraid to be bold and innovative with their player development methods, but implementing a four-man outfield defensive alignment throughout the organization feels like it would be a bridge too far, even for them.\n<\/p>\n
\n\tSo how is this going to work? The Marlins already had good outfield depth entering the 2025-26 offseason. Several recent trades have bolstered that area to such an extent, I’m struggling with the rudimentary math. Barring undisclosed injuries and\/or off-the-field issues, it will take immense creativity to manage playing time at the position, from Beloit all the way up to Miami.\n<\/p>\n
\n\tLet’s do a rough projection of Opening Day assignments for Marlins outfielders. Players with the “UTIL” label are candidates for infield reps.\n<\/p>\n
\t\tMLB:\u00a0Jakob Marsee<\/a>, Kyle Stowers<\/a>, Owen Caissie<\/a>, Heriberto Hern\u00e1ndez<\/a>, Griffin Conine<\/a>\u00a0(UTIL), Javier Sanoja<\/a> (UTIL), Christopher Morel<\/a> (UTIL)<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tThe Marlins have expressed a willingness to use both Conine and Morel at first base, despite both being neophytes at the position.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tSanoja would be Marsee’s center field backup in this scenario, but receive the rest of his reps at second base, third base and shortstop.<\/p>\n \t\tTriple-A: Kemp Alderman<\/a>, Matthew Etzel<\/a>, Victor Mesa Jr.<\/a>, Esteury Ruiz<\/a>, Andrew Pintar<\/a>, Mark Coley II<\/a>, Jacob Berry<\/a> (UTIL)<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tPoor Daniel Johnson<\/a> signed his\u00a0minor\u00a0league deal before Miami traded Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers. The\u00a0prospects acquired in exchange have quickly made Johnson expendable\u2014he’ll need to ball out in spring training just to merit a roster spot in Jacksonville.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tWatching Berry at any of the infield positions is an eyesore, but with all of these other outfield mouths to feed, expect to see him\u00a0used frequently\u00a0on the dirt.<\/p>\n \t\tDouble-A: Fenwick Trimble<\/a>, Brendan Jones<\/a>, Dillon Lewis<\/a>, Ethan O’Donnell<\/a>, Colby Shade<\/a>, Eric Rataczak<\/a>\u00a0(UTIL), Michael Snyder<\/a> (UTIL)<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tThis looks a lot tidier if we assume that Rataczak and Snyder will transition to first base and platoon there.<\/p>\n \t\tHigh-A: Dillon Head<\/a>, Cam Cannarella<\/a>, Brandon Compton<\/a>, Emaarion Boyd<\/a>, Micah McDowell<\/a>,\u00a0Ian Lewis<\/a> (UTIL), Jes\u00fas Hern\u00e1ndez<\/a> (UTIL)<\/p>\n \n\tI suspect that none of these players will be starting on a daily basis throughout the entire season.
