{"id":526687,"date":"2026-01-18T18:57:20","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T18:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/526687\/"},"modified":"2026-01-18T18:57:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T18:57:20","slug":"former-braves-giants-pitcher-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/526687\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Braves, Giants Pitcher Dies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Ray Crone, whose five-year major league career included the second game ever played on the West Coast, died Thursday. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waynebozefuneralhome.com\/obituaries\/raymond-crone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">He was 94<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Crone signed with the Boston Braves one day after he graduated from high school in Memphis, Tennessee in 1949. Four years later, while Crone was still climbing the minor league ladder, the Braves relocated to Milwaukee \u2014 what would become a recurring theme in his career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">More news: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/sports\/mlb\/former-cubs-pitcher-world-series-champion-dies-11345710\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Former Cubs Pitcher, World Series Champion, Dies<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">After seeing his first major league spring training action <a href=\"https:\/\/ballnine.com\/2024\/04\/12\/replay-ray-crone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in 1953<\/a>, Crone made the Braves&#8217; Opening Day roster in 1954. He faced a stressful situation in his debut in the first game of the season. Crone inherited a first-and-second, one-out jam in the sixth inning in Cincinnati, but retired the only two batters he faced on groundouts without allowing a run.<\/p>\n<p><img id=\"11378853\" alt=\"Ray Crone obituary\" caption=\"Baseball -- Dodgers versus Giants, with ceremonies, 18 April 1958. In 1956, Crone went 11-10 with a 3.87 ERA, setting a career-high in innings pitched (169.2) while starting 21 of his 35 games. The Braves lost their 2.5-game lead over the Dodgers in September and settled for second place in the National League.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The Braves would finally reach the World Series after knocking on the door the previous three years. Crone would not be part of the team that faced the New York Yankees in the World Series, however. He retired with a 30-30 record and 3.87 ERA in 137 MLB games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Crone began a long scouting career in 1971 with the Montreal Expos. He later became an area scout for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/sports-mlb-orioles\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Baltimore Orioles<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/sports-mlb-padres\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego Padres<\/a>, and retired in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">&#8220;Looking back on it now, I am kind of proud of what I did,&#8221; Crone <a href=\"https:\/\/ballnine.com\/2024\/04\/12\/replay-ray-crone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told BallNine.com in 2024<\/a>. &#8220;I think I could have done a lot better, but I am proud of what I accomplished. It was hard to work your way up through the system because there were so many more guys back then.
