{"id":530666,"date":"2026-01-21T09:51:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T09:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/530666\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T09:51:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T09:51:16","slug":"carlos-beltran-hall-of-fame-worthy-despite-sign-stealing-scandal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/530666\/","title":{"rendered":"Carlos Beltran Hall of Fame worthy despite sign-stealing scandal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Carlos Beltr\u00e1n\u2019s involvement in the Astros sign-stealing scandal on their way to the 2017 World Series title tarnished his reputation and cost him the Mets managerial job \u2014 but it didn\u2019t ultimately keep him out of the Baseball Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>Beltr\u00e1n <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/20\/sports\/carlos-beltran-andruw-jones-elected-to-baseball-hall-of-fame\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was inducted in his fourth year on the ballot<\/a> with 84.2 percent of the vote, and on a Zoom call Tuesday, the former Met and Yankee acknowledged <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/20\/sports\/mets-fans-its-time-to-stop-letting-that-one-carlos-beltran-memory-haunt-you\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his past transgressions made his road to Cooperstown more difficult<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt the Astros situation has been a topic,\u201d Beltr\u00e1n said, adding that it wasn\u2019t \u201cpositive\u201d for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, when I look at my career, when I look at the things in the game of baseball, there\u2019s no doubt you\u2019re gonna go through ups and downs,\u201d Beltr\u00e1n said. \u201cYou\u2019re gonna make good decisions [and] you\u2019re gonna make so-so decisions, right? And, also, you\u2019re gonna make bad decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That includes his involvement in Houston\u2019s plan to steal signs in 2017 \u2014 which included the banging of trash cans to alert hitters of pitches\u2014 including in the playoffs, when they beat the Yankees in the ALCS on their way to a championship in Beltr\u00e1n\u2019s final season of his playing career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I retired from baseball, I thought everything I built\u2026 meaning like relationships and good people, I was able to relate myself with, I thought that was gonna be lost,\u2019\u2019 said Beltr\u00e1n, who later worked for the Yankees and is currently a special advisor for the Mets. \u201cBeing back in the game, I still receive love from the people. I still receive love from the players. The teammates inside the clubhouse know the type of person that I am. At the same time, I understand that\u2019s also a story I have to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now he can tell that story as a Hall of Famer, as Beltr\u00e1n will be enshrined in July, alongside Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent, another former Met.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.31958763;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38240259\" width=\"779\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Carlos-Beltran-3.jpg\" alt=\"Carlos Beltr\u00e1n's involvement in the Astros sign-stealing scandal did not end up costing him a spot in the Hall of Fame.\" class=\"wp-image-38240259\"  \/>Carlos Beltr\u00e1n\u2019s involvement in the Astros sign-stealing scandal did not end up costing him a spot in the Hall of Fame. I know that when I\u2019m around [the ballpark] and around the players, they acknowledge me and shake my hand.
