Shohei Ohtani\u2019s $680 million deferred \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truebluela.com\/2023\/12\/11\/23996285\/shohei-ohtani-contract-details-dodgers-deferred-salary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">97 percent of his 10-year contract<\/a> \u2014 is the outlier, with deferred money in the other nine contracts ranging between 12.5 percent (Tucker) and 36.3 percent (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.truebluela.com\/2024\/12\/3\/24311261\/blake-snell-dodgers-contract-details\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blake Snell<\/a>) of the total contract guarantee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The deferrals in Tucker\u2019s contract reduce the average annual value from $60 million to $57,195,945 per year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Tucker has two opportunities to opt out of the contract \u2014 after either the 2027 or 2028 seasons. The Dodgers typically don\u2019t include opt-outs, but given that Tucker was also being heavily pursued by the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets, including the ability for Tucker to leave potentially after two seasons was a way for the Dodgers to sweeten the deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cIn two years, we\u2019ll know a lot more about a lot of things than we do know, and just because he opts out doesn\u2019t mean that we won\u2019t be there to try to sign up,\u201d Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. \u201cIn any deal you\u2019d prefer to to have an opt-out. Generally speaking, I think they\u2019re very poorly priced in the market, which is why we have avoided them by and large. In this case, it just made sense for a confluence of reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cThe depth of our system put us in a position where, while the cost is still meaningful, it wasn\u2019t as significant. We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truebluela.com\/los-angeles-dodgers-prospects\/109181\/baseball-america-2026-top-100-quintero-depaula-sirota-hope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have a very strong system up top<\/a>,\u201d Friedman said. \u201cBut even more than that, I think the depth of our system allows us this one year to have our food budget for the draft meetings exceed our signing bonuses.
