{"id":532796,"date":"2026-01-22T16:04:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T16:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/532796\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T16:04:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T16:04:16","slug":"brewers-gm-thinks-he-ruined-david-stearns-anniversary-dinner-with-blockbuster-mets-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/532796\/","title":{"rendered":"Brewers GM thinks he \u2018ruined\u2019 David Stearns\u2019 anniversary dinner with blockbuster Mets trade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hopefully David Stearns and his wife had an early anniversary dinner Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Brewers president Matt Arnold claimed the two pals completed <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/21\/sports\/mets-in-deep-talks-to-acquire-freddy-peralta-from-brewers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">their blockbuster Freddy Peralta trade<\/a> on the day of the Mets\u2019 president of baseball operations\u2019 wedding anniversary to his wife, Whitney Ann Lee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows the players well. He and I have worked very well together for many years. Obviously care about him a lot,\u201d Arnold said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/sports\/mlb\/brewers\/2026\/01\/22\/what-matt-arnold-said-about-milwaukee-brewers-trading-ace-freddy-peralta-to-new-york-mets\/88295001007\/?gnt-cfr=1&amp;gca-cat=p&amp;gca-uir=true&amp;gca-epti=z116642p118150c118150d00----v116642d--56--b--56--&amp;gca-ft=200&amp;gca-ds=sophi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to the Journal Sentinel<\/a>. \u201c(Wednesday)\u2019s his anniversary and I was at his wedding. We go back a long way. I think I might have ruined his anniversary dinner. Charles Wenzelberg \/ New York Post<\/p>\n<p>The life of a baseball partner can be difficult due to the long hours and the never-ending season and offseason, with holidays, anniversaries and birthdays sometimes coming second.<\/p>\n<p>Stearns and Lee married in 2017, when he was the Brewers\u2019 general manager, and they have <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Brewers\/status\/1047912183085125633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">at least one child together<\/a>, daughter Nora, born in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>We assume that Arnold and Stearns had made plenty of progress before finally pushing this trade past the finish line Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>The Mets needed a frontline pitcher and acquired Peralta, who posted a career-best 2.70 ERA spanning 33 starts last year.<\/p>\n<p>Peralta has one year left on his contract, and the Mets capitalized on Milwaukee\u2019s small-market operation that largely prevents them from signing star players to nine-figure contract extensions.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say Peralta came cheap.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38252895\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/milwaukee-brewers-general-manager-matt-114062012.jpg\" alt=\"Milwaukee Brewers general manager Matt Arnold speaking to someone off-camera.\" class=\"wp-image-38252895\"  \/>Brewers general manager Matt Arnold. AP<\/p>\n<p>The Mets parted ways with MLB.com\u2019s No. 30 prospect in infielder Jett Williams and starter Brandon Sproat, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/21\/sports\/six-mets-ranked-in-baseball-americas-top-100-prospects-list\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whom Baseball America ranked No. 81<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee also sent swingman Tobias Meyers to the Mets.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is we have one year left with Freddy Peralta. He\u2019s a free agent at the end of the season. That\u2019s always going to be a challenge for us,\u201d Arnold said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had to make these tough decisions. To add two players that we like and have them as a part of this group this season and well beyond that is something that we felt is very good for the Milwaukee Brewers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the Mets, this move likely puts a bow on their offseason after a January flurry including Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr. and now Peralta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcquiring Freddy adds another established starter to help lead our rotation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SNY_Mets\/status\/2014184295993127252?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Stearns said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThroughout the off season, we sought to complement our rotation with another front-end pitcher, and we\u2019re thrilled we are able to bring Freddy to the Mets.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Hopefully David Stearns and his wife had an early anniversary dinner Wednesday night.
