{"id":537418,"date":"2026-01-25T09:27:25","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T09:27:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/537418\/"},"modified":"2026-01-25T09:27:25","modified_gmt":"2026-01-25T09:27:25","slug":"padres-star-yu-darvish-addresses-retirement-rumors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/537418\/","title":{"rendered":"Padres star Yu Darvish addresses retirement rumors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yu Darvish is hanging up his cleats \u2014 or is he?<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese right-hander reportedly told the Padres that he was retiring after 13 big league seasons, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2026\/01\/24\/padres-pitcher-yu-darvish-set-to-retire\/?clearUserState=true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the San Diego Union-Tribune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The news came as a bit of shock, considering that he would be leaving the game with three years and $43 million left on the six-year, $108 million extension he signed with San Diego in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The Union-Tribune\u2019s report was quickly refuted by Darvish\u2019s agent, Joel Wolfe, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Feinsand\/status\/2015173744705020369?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">who told MLB.com\u2019s Mark Feinsand<\/a> that his client\u2019s days in the majors might not actually be over.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yu Darvish of the San Diego Padres pitches during the first inning of a baseball game against the Chicago White Sox September 30, 2022 at Petco Park in San Diego, California. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYu has not made a final decision yet,\u201d Wolfe said, per Feinsand. \u201cThis is a complicated matter we are still working through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not long after, Darvish shot down the retirement talk himself, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/faridyu\/status\/2015178902596206685?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">taking to X to set his story straight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may have seen an article, and although I am leaning towards voiding the contract, there\u2019s still a lot that has to be talked over with the Padres so the finer details are yet to be decided,\u201d  he wrote. \u201cAlso I will not be announcing my retirement yet. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now I am fully focused on my rehab for my elbow, and if I get to a point where I can throw again, I will start from scratch again to compete. MLB Photos via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>In December, Darvish appeared uncertain if he would pitch again in the majors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not necessarily thinking about really pitching, as I go through this rehab process right now,\u201d Darvish said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/yu-darvish-uncertain-about-his-pitching-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">per MLB.com<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t have that in my mind. I\u2019m just trying to just rehab my arm right now. If I get the urge to come back, if I feel that I can stand on the mound and come back, then I will go for that. But I\u2019ll just leave it there for now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Retirement or not, baseball fans won\u2019t be seeing Darvish in 2026 after the 39-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/04\/sports\/padres-yu-darvish-out-for-2026-season-after-surgery-reveal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">underwent UCL brace surgery<\/a> on his throwing arm in November, sidelining him for the entire season.<\/p>\n<p>If Darvish does retire \u2014 or at stop pitching in MLB at the very least \u2014 it would mark the end of one of the most iconic Japanese-born pitchers there\u2019s ever been to pitch stateside.<\/p>\n<p>San Diego Padres\u2019 Yu Darvish leaves the game during the second inning of Game 3 of a National League wild card baseball game against the Chicago Cubs Thursday, Oct. 2, 2025, in Chicago.  AP<\/p>\n<p>Since debuting in 2012 with the Rangers, Darvish has made five All-Star teams and received Cy Young votes in four different seasons, finishing as high as second twice, including his second season in the majors when he led all of baseball with 277 strikeouts in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s registered 115 career wins in stints with the Rangers, Dodgers, Cubs and Padres, and has the most strikeouts by a Japanese-born pitcher in MLB history.<\/p>\n<p>Darvish was limited by injuries in 2025 and didn\u2019t debut until early July after dealing with elbow inflammation during the first half.<\/p>\n<p>In 72 innings for San Diego, Darvish went 5-5 with a 5.38 ERA and 68 strikeouts across 15 starts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/02\/sports\/padres-beside-themselves-after-controversial-strikeout-call\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">series-deciding Game 3 of the wild-card round<\/a> against the Cubs, Darvish started and tossed just one frame, giving up four hits and two runs during the 3-1 loss.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Yu Darvish is hanging up his cleats \u2014 or is he?
