Part of the fun is trying to identify those breakouts before it happens. So today, we’re identifying Twins prospects who have the potential to make a jump in 2026.

To qualify, a player must rank outside the organization’s preseason Top 10 prospects. All scouting reports are from Baseball America’s 2026 Prospect handbook, which you can purchase here.

You can find Top 30 prospect rankings for all teams here and all breakout candidates here.

Breakout Prospects

Riley Quick, RHP

BA Grade/Risk: 55/High
Adjusted Grade: 40

Track Record: It wasn’t a certainty Quick would even play baseball in college as he received SEC offers as an offensive lineman in high school and his brother Pierce played college football for Alabama and Georgia Tech. He ultimately decided to focus solely on baseball and spent three years at Alabama, where he only threw 87 innings and missed a year with Tommy John surgery. The Twins drafted him 36th overall in 2025 and signed him for a slot-value bonus of $2.69 million.

Scouting Report: Quick brings unique size and athleticism to the mound at 6-foot-6, 255 pounds. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a crossfire delivery. His fastball sits 96-98 mph and tops out at 99, but plays below its velocity. He throws both a sinker and four-seamer equally, but their usage will likely be tweaked in pro ball. There are differing opinions over what Quick’s best secondary pitch is. He uses his 84-88 mph slider the most but it is inconsistent and his changeup and cutter show more potential. His changeup shows the most bat-missing ability with a combination of deceptive arm speed and late fade and he really took to his low-90s cutter, which he started throwing in 2025. His strike-throwing improved in 2025 and will be a key area for his development going forward.

The Future: Quick brings a fascinating skill set that the Twins now have the chance to mold. He has midrotation upside, but that projection is fluid given his limited experience as a full-time pitcher. He’ll start 2026 at a full-season affiliate, with High-A Cedar Rapids not out of the question given his pitch quality.

Scouting Grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 55 | Cutter: 55 | Control: 45

Santiago Castellanos, RHP

BA Grade/Risk: 55/Extreme
Adjusted Grade: 35

Track Record: Castellanos signed with the Twins in January 2025 for $247,500. He was one of the youngest pitchers in the class and didn’t turn 17 until July, over a month into his pro career. He quickly emerged as one of the top pitchers in the Dominican Summer League, striking out 36 while only walking nine in 29 innings. He ranked seventh in the Top 35 DSL Prospects list after the 2025 season.

Scouting Report: The main knock on Castellanos is his size, as he is only 5-foot-10 with a medium frame and minimal projection. He is twitchy and athletic, with a very quick arm. The ball comes easy out of his hand and his fastball sits 92-94 mph and touches 96. It has rise and run and he throws it for strikes. Castellanos has two secondaries that will flash plus in his sweeper and changeup. His sweeper averaged over 15 inches of horizontal break and missed bats at an elite rate in the DSL. His changeup didn’t miss as many bats, but some evaluators think it has more long-term potential. His feel for pitching is also so advanced that the Twins had him experiment with both a slider and cutter, but the former didn’t yield results.

The Future: Castellanos will come stateside in 2026. He doesn’t have the typical physical projection of a 17-year-old, but he is advanced for his age and has feel for secondaries that should allow him to acclimate quickly to more advanced competition. Given his age and size, the error bars are high, but he has the early makings of a potential midrotation starter.

Scouting Grades: Fastball: 55 | Changeup: 60 | Cutter: 40 | Sweeper: 60 | Control: 45

Matt Barr, RHP

BA Grade/Risk: 55/Extreme
Adjusted Grade: 35

Track Record: Barr was one of the top junior college prospects in the 2025 draft after a dominant freshmen season at SUNY Niagara, where he was named Division III juco pitcher of the year. He was committed to Tennessee and impressed at the MLB Draft Combine where he had the second-highest spin rate on his curveball and slider of all pitchers who threw bullpens. The Twins selected him in the fifth round and signed him for a well over-slot bonus of $762,500.

Scouting Report: Barr has a ways to go to fill out his 6-foot-6, 195 pound frame. His fastball sits 92-94 mph and tops out at 97 mph. He projects to add velocity as he matures and needs to continue to refine his control which is inconsistent right now. Barr’s outlier ability to spin the ball is a potential carrying trait. He throws both a mid-to-high-80s slider and low-80s curveball that have spin rates around 3,000 rpm. They are high quality breaking balls with a lot of movement and his feel for them is advanced. Both have premium bat-missing potential, but his slider is more advanced right now and projects as a potential plus offering, while his curveball projects as above-average. Barr didn’t use a changeup as an amateur, but could look to add one in pro ball.

The Future: Barr should make his pro debut in 2026 with Low-A Fort Myers. His development will likely be slow and he is not a lock to stick as a starter. His combination of physical projection and outlier feel for spin make him an intriguing pitching prospect that could move quickly up this list with a strong debut.

Scouting Grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 55 | Slider: 60 | Control: 40

Every year, a handful of players ranked outside the top 10 in their respective farm systems take meaningful…

[3
71247,5,4
0":"post-538729","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-mlb","8":"tag-2026-breakout-mlb-prospects","9":"tag-baseball","10":"tag-mlb
["GET
