Part of the fun is trying to identify those breakouts before it happens. So today, we’re identifying Athletics prospects who have the potential to make a jump in 2026.

To qualify, a player must rank outside the organization’s preseason Top 10 prospects. All scouting reports are from Baseball America’s 2026 Prospect handbook, which you can purchase here.

You can find Top 30 prospect rankings for all teams here and all breakout candidates here.

Breakout Prospects

Shotaro Morii, SS/RHP

BA Grade/Risk: 55/High
Adjusted Grade: 40

Track Record: The two-way talent eschewed a path to the Nippon Professional Baseball League and instead signed with the A’s for $1.51 million in 2025 out of high school in Japan. Morii debuted in the Arizona Complex League and slashed .250/.399/.384 with three homers over 43 games. His pitching ramp-up was delayed, and he didn’t appear on the mound during the regular season, though he logged innings in instructional league after the year.

Scouting Report: For an 18-year-old with little experience against premium pitching, Morii adapted quickly and showed surprising physicality. He has a discerning eye—sometimes overly so—and combines bat speed with barrel accuracy to pepper line drives to all fields. While he only hit three homers, Morii’s underlying exit velocities were above-average for his age, though scouts don’t see a ton of physical projection remaining, which could also impact his defensive home. He has an above-average arm but fringy range at shortstop that could one day push him to second or third base. On the mound, Morii is more raw. In limited looks, he showed a three-pitch mix fronted by a low-90s fastball along with decent feel for a splitter and a slider that acts more like a curveball, plus a smooth and repeatable delivery.

The Future: There’s virtually no modern precedent for a two-way player who regularly spends time in the field. The A’s plan to let Morii continue both roles in 2026 with Low-A Stockton, where he could rotate between infield duties, DH and a weekly mound appearance, though his long-term future is likely to come at the plate.

Scouting Grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 45 | Field: 50 | Arm: 55 | Fastball: 50 | Slider: 45 | Split: 45 | Control: 55

Zane Taylor, RHP

BA Grade/Risk: 45/Average
Adjusted Grade: 35

Track Record: Taylor was a great strike-thrower over his first three seasons at UNC Wilmington, then his stuff took a leap in 2025 while maintaining pinpoint control. The result was an 11-2, 1.98 season and second-team All-American honors. Taylor then went to the draft combine, where he threw the hardest four-seamer (97.3 mph) of any pitcher, before the A’s drafted him in the fifth round. He impressed them enough to warrant a two-inning spot start with Triple-A Las Vegas in September.

Scouting Report: After previously sitting in the low 90s, Taylor’s fastball averaged 93.6 mph and touched 98 as a senior with a 73% strike rate, the fourth-best mark among college arms who threw at least 500 four-seamers in 2025. To hitters, the pitch appears to have dead-zone shape, but it avoids barrels because of its carry-run characteristics from an extremely low release height. Taylor doesn’t have a clear plus secondary, but he throws plenty of them. His 83 mph changeup might be the best of the bunch, and he also works in a mid-80s cutter that looks like a gyro slider, an 82 mph curveball, and the A’s taught him a sweeper in pro ball. Taylor has impressive command and his 3% walk rate in 2025 was eighth-best among Division I pitchers with 50-plus innings.

The Future: Taylor has a great sense of how his arsenal and arm slot work together. If he can sustain his velocity gains, he has back-of-the-rotation upside with a chance to move quickly through the A’s system.

Scouting Grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Changeup: 55 | Cutter: 50 | Sweeper: 50 | Control: 60

Darwing Ozuna, OF

BA Grade/Risk: 50/Extreme
Adjusted Grade: 30

Track Record: Ozuna was one of four big-money signings in the Athletics’ 2025 international class, inking a $1 million bonus out of the Dominican Republic. The 17-year-old made his pro debut that summer. A nagging hamate injury limited him to 35 games and a .211/.301/.311 line with two homers.

Scouting Report: Ozuna’s surface-level production in his pro debut belies his power potential. At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds with a high-waisted frame, Ozuna oozes physicality and has a chance to grow into plus-plus raw power. The teenager is already producing some of the louder exit velocities of any hitter in the system thanks to his strength and bat speed. He’s likely a power-over-hit profile in the long run thanks to his longer levers, raw approach and willingness to expand the zone. Ozuna has a second plus tool on his card: an easy plus throwing arm that should fit comfortably in a corner outfield position as he matures and slows down.

The Future: His hit tool needs plenty of maturation, but Ozuna has the look of a classic corner masher with an impressive combination of size, power and impact potential. The A’s were tempted to bring him stateside in 2025. Instead, they’ll hope he takes an Edgar Montero-like step forward in his second go-around in rookie ball in 2026.

Scouting Grades: Hit: 35 | Power: 70 | Run: 40 | Field: 50 | Arm: 70

Every year, a handful of players ranked outside the top 10 in their respective farm systems take meaningful…

[2391
71247,537,5,4,3226
0":"post-538836","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-athletics","8":"tag-2026-breakout-mlb-prospects","9":"tag-athletics","10":"tag-baseball","11":"tag-mlb","12":"tag-mlb-athletics
["GET
