{"id":541804,"date":"2026-01-28T05:01:22","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T05:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/541804\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T05:01:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T05:01:22","slug":"freddy-peralta-relishing-mets-chance-but-wont-talk-extension-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/541804\/","title":{"rendered":"Freddy Peralta relishing Mets chance but won&#8217;t talk extension yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Freddy Peralta is itching to get started with the Mets and feed off the high expectations and pressure that comes with pitching in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not he will call it home beyond this year, though, remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>Peralta, the new anchor in the Mets rotation <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/21\/sports\/mets-in-deep-talks-to-acquire-freddy-peralta-from-brewers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">after he was acquired in a trade with the Brewers last week<\/a>, arrives in Queens with one year left before free agency. <\/p>\n<p>But when asked about the potential of signing a contract extension, the right-hander pitched around it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just got here,\u201d he said Tuesday on an introductory Zoom call with reporters. \u201cI think that I got to see around, I have to share time with my teammates and think about different ideas, learn about everybody, coaches, the organization in general and then we can see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Stearns last week <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/22\/sports\/mets-david-stearns-confident-freddy-peralta-is-a-rotation-stabilizer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declined to comment on whether an extension has been discussed<\/a> with Peralta, but the president of baseball operations indicated the trade was made with the understanding that it could just be a short-term relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Still, this is now the second time Stearns has traded for Peralta \u2014 the first when he was a 19-year-old acquired by the Brewers \u2014 which the now 29-year-old right-hander acknowledged \u201csays a lot.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>This time Stearns is adding Peralta to the rotation as an established, high-end pitcher \u2014 costing the Mets prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat \u2014 who should elevate their chances heading into 2026.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38307658\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1769576481_799_Freddy-Peralta-2.jpg\" alt=\"Freddy Peralta pitched to a 2.70 ERA across 33 starts with 204 strikeouts in a career-high 176 \u00b2\/\u2083 innings last season.\" class=\"wp-image-38307658\"  \/>Freddy Peralta pitched to a 2.70 ERA across 33 starts with 204 strikeouts in a career-high 176 \u00b2\/\u2083 innings last season. Being honest, I like the competition that we\u2019re going to face here. I\u2019ve been around, watching for years what it is to be part of that big-market team. I remember Opening Day in 2025 against the Yankees, it\u2019s how it felt. I felt the same and it was crazy, the vibes and all that, the energy of the fans. Even being the first day, I felt that. I think that\u2019s going to feel [like it] every five days in New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dominican Republic native \u2014 who said he was still unsure if he would participate in the WBC this spring because of \u201cpersonal reasons\u201d \u2014 said he was looking forward to pitching in front of a strong Latin community that New York offers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a huge challenge for me because I know how we are, the Latinos,\u2019 he said. \u201cI know that we have that inside of us, that hunger to win every time. I think I\u2019m going to take that as a challenge to get better, to feel better, to get better every five days, to give my best and to make adjustments quicker. I know the people there are thinking the same way that I\u2019m thinking: we just want to win.
