The former top prospect is lined up to start at either second or third base, especially after Alex Bregman’s departure.<\/p>\n

Except the expectation might be slightly different than reality, according to beat writer Chris Cotillo of MassLive<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mayer bats left-handed, while Gonzalez hits from the right side.<\/p>\n

If Boston added no one else, they both might start every day.<\/p>\n

But if the Red Sox traded for a second baseman, like Nico Hoerner or Brendan Donovan, it would set up a Mayer-Gonzalez platoon.<\/p>\n

That would be sound strategy, because Gonzalez crushes left-handed pitching.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Gonzalez had a .978 specifically against southpaw pitching. Boston will certainly find a way to get him in lineups against lefties, and a platoon with Mayer, at least in the early going, would indeed make a lot of sense.<\/p>\n
