Fortunately, Marcelo Mayer can play second or third base, so there’s some flexibility in terms of how they can fill that hole.

However, the trade market is proving to be an imperfect solution, or at least a slow-moving one. And one insider believes that eventually, the price tags for players like Nico Hoerner and Isaac Paredes will bring the Red Sox back to the free-agent sphere.

If you like our content, choose Sports Illustrated as a preferred source on Google.

Will Red Sox sign former Mariners slugger?

Oct 17, 2025; Seattle, Washington, USA; Seattle Mariners third baseman Eugenio Suarez (28) hits a home run against the Toronto Blue Jays during the second inning during game five of the ALCS round for the 2025 MLB playoffs at T-Mobile Park. They’re making $27 million combined for competitive balance tax purposes.

Suárez is a known commodity at this point: big home run totals, lots of strikeouts, and questionable third-base defense. Are the Red Sox willing to stomach the latter two to receive a huge boost where they need it?

More MLB: Red Sox Projected to Option 6 Talented Arms to Triple-A

The Boston Red Sox don’t see their roster as a finished product, but finding that last move is…

[2375
5,141,48,2542,4,89,2543
0":"post-543682","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-boston-red-sox","8":"tag-baseball","9":"tag-boston","10":"tag-boston-red-sox","11":"tag-bostonredsox","12":"tag-mlb","13":"tag-red-sox","14":"tag-redsox
["GET
