Justine Willard / Athletics / Getty Images

Jan. 30, 2026Updated 3:48 pm EST

The Athletics may still be in their West Sacramento limbo, but that hasn’t stopped them from handing out their second massive contract extension this offseason. On Friday, the team announced it signed shortstop Jacob Wilson to a seven-year, $70 million extension with a club option for an eighth year.

The extension, first reported by ESPN, comes little more than a month after the A’s signed Tyler Soderstrom to a seven-year, $86 million deal. That extension represented the largest contract in franchise history, and now it has been followed up with another lucrative deal from an organization that has historically watched its best players find riches elsewhere.

Wilson, 23, finished second in American League Rookie of the Year voting behind A’s teammate Nick Kurtz, who received all 30 first-place votes. Wilson, the son of former major-league infielder Jack Wilson, was the starter at shortstop for the AL All-Star team in 2025 and finished the season hitting .311/.355/.444 with 13 home runs, 63 RBIs and an .800 OPS. While the team isn’t expected in Las Vegas until the 2028 season, they will now have another of their core players under contract well beyond their arrival in Nevada. In addition to Soderstrom, the A’s have also extended designated hitter Brent Rooker through 2030 and outfielder Lawrence Butler through 2031, with a club option for 2032.

The Wilson deal aligns well with previous deals for shortstops with less than two full years of service time. Andrelton Simmons set that market more than a decade ago when he was extended in Atlanta. Simmons, like Wilson, was coming off a 3.5-win season (according to FanGraphs) in his first full big-league season when he signed for seven years and $58 million. Including inflation, that deal would be worth about $80 million today. (Simmons earned a little more because of the excellent partial season he had played as a rookie in 2012, which not only gave him a longer track record than Wilson but also gave him a shot at being eligible for SuperTwo status in arbitration.)

Wilson signed a slightly richer deal than the one inked by Colorado’s Ezequiel Tovar ahead of the 2024 season. Tovar had five seasons of team control left and was coming off a season about half as valuable as the one Wilson just had. He signed for seven years and $63.5 million.

Jacob Wilson is the latest member of the Athletics’ young core to sign an early extension with the…

[2391
537,5,4,3226,63
0":"post-546999","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-athletics","8":"tag-athletics","9":"tag-baseball","10":"tag-mlb","11":"tag-mlb-athletics","12":"tag-oakland-athletics
["GET
