The Toronto Blue Jays<\/a> started the offseason on fire, making several major additions. Landing big-name talent is always a boost for a club coming off a World Series berth. Early on, it appeared Toronto was poised to continue building through free agency, but MLB insider Jim Bowden cautioned that the Blue Jays only had the flexibility to sign either Bo Bichette or Kyle Tucker<\/a> \u2014 not both.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt takes them out of doing both Tucker and Bichette, but it doesn’t take them out of doing one or the other,\u201d Bowden said.<\/p>\n

Toronto ultimately shifted its focus toward Tucker, and its relationship with Bichette appeared to sour in the process. With all eyes on Tucker, it was the Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a> who swooped in and finalized a deal to sign the star outfielder.<\/p>\n

\u201cKyle Tucker, the consensus best player available in free agency, agreed to join the Dodgers on Thursday, sources told ESPN, a little more than a month after star closer Edwin Diaz did the same. Tucker’s deal is for four years at $240 million and includes opt-outs after the second and third seasons, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Jesse Rogers,\u201d ESPN\u2019s Alden Gonzalez wrote.<\/a><\/p>\n

For the most part, the Blue Jays\u2019 offseason appears complete, but FanSided\u2019s Zachary Rotman believes Toronto could still make a significant move by signing Framber Valdez.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there’s one thing Valdez is known for, it’s generating ground balls at an elite rate. Valdez ranked in the 97th percentile with a 59.4 percent ground ball rate last year, and he’s ranked in the 91st percentile or higher since debuting in 2018. The best way to maximize a pitcher who generates a ton of ground balls is to have an elite defense behind him ready to turn them into outs. The Toronto Blue Jays, compared to these other suitors, have far and away the best of the bunch,\u201d Rotman wrote.<\/a><\/p>\n

If Toronto is able to land Valdez, the Blue Jays would boast one of the strongest starting rotations in the league. The franchise is aiming for another World Series appearance, and a move of this magnitude would go a long way toward that goal.<\/p>\n

Even without landing their top targets, the Blue Jays have still managed to improve this offseason. In a tightly contested AL East, Toronto remains in prime position to contend for the division and make another deep postseason run.<\/p>\n
