\u201cFor me, being visible is being able to be unapologetically myself,\u201d says Sasha Colby. \u201cDrag is my sort of therapy, my way of releasing and telling stories.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Thursday, June 5, the\u00a0RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race Season 15 winner will be front and center during the pre-game festivities at Team DC\u2019s 20th annual \u201cNight OUT at the Nationals.\u201d She\u2019ll then\u00a0throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the matchup between the Washington Nationals and the Chicago Cubs.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m gonna definitely show them Sasha Colby on that pitcher\u2019s mound,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m going to be in a very fun, proud Sasha Colby outfit\u2026. Let\u2019s just say it\u2019s not your standard regulation baseball uniform.\u201d<\/p>\n
Colby, dubbed the \u201cQueen of Hair Flips\u201d by the Drag Race\u00a0fan community, confirms she\u2019s \u201cdefinitely gonna do a hair flip or two.\u201d<\/p>\n
The annual event honors the Nationals baseball team\u2019s LGBTQ fan base. This year\u2019s event coincides with the celebration of WorldPride DC<\/a>, with \u201cNight OUT\u201d serving as the kickoff to a weekend filled with dozens of events citywide.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is my first time doing something athletic or sports-related,\u201d Colby says of throwing out the pitch. \u201cThis is definitely something out of my wheelhouse.\u201d<\/p>\n But, as it turns out, it\u2019s not her first brush with baseball.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a kid, my brother enrolled me into baseball,\u201d she recalls. \u201cAnd I was playing far right field, and I was literally just spinning around, doing turns and looking at the sky while the game was playing. So they needed to pull me out, because I could have probably gotten injured by not paying attention.\u201d<\/p>\n Prior to the on-field pre-game festivities, Colby will host a brief, ticketed \u201cMeet & Greet\u201d event inside the stadium.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I do a typical meet-and-greet, I try to connect with the people I\u2019m meeting because they give me energy, and I can actually put faces and stories to the people I see when I look out into the audience. It makes me feel safer to perform because I\u2019ve already met them.\u201d<\/p>\n Colby appreciates that the Washington Nationals continue to support the community, especially when so many others are pulling back in the face of a hostile political climate.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s great to see, especially in these political times, how sports and queer celebration can go hand-in-hand,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n Night OUT at the Nationals is Thursday, June 5, at Nationals Park, 1500 S. Capitol St. SE, in Washington, D.C. Pre-game festivities begin at 5:30 p.m., with the game commencing at 6:45 p.m. General admission is $28.
