{"id":550677,"date":"2026-02-02T17:29:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T17:29:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/550677\/"},"modified":"2026-02-02T17:29:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T17:29:12","slug":"twins-ownership-shift-made-it-the-right-time-to-move-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/550677\/","title":{"rendered":"Twins ownership shift made it the right time to move on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-franchises \">Derek Falvey on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/01\/30\/derek-falvey-out-as-twins-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/01\/30\/derek-falvey-out-as-twins-president\/\">resigned as Twins President<\/a> after more than nine years and called it a \u201cgut feel\u201d after recent changes within the team\u2019s ownership ranks. Falvey was on MLB Network Radio on Sunday and said, \u201cSometimes over a long period of time there\u2019s an evolution. For us, that evolution really coincided with an ownership shift.\u201d The Pohlads last August <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/08\/25\/twins-sale-on-pause-until-labor-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/08\/25\/twins-sale-on-pause-until-labor-agreement\/\">took the Twins off the market<\/a> and announced the addition of some limited partners late last year. As part of that, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/12\/17\/twins-add-three-minority-investors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/12\/17\/twins-add-three-minority-investors\/\">Tom Pohlad took over<\/a> running the day-to-day operations of the team. Falvey noted he and Pohlad \u201chad very candid conversations about structure, his vision, how he wanted to operate, what the organization looked like.\u201d He ultimately decided it was the \u201cright time for me personally\u201d to look for something else within the sport, saying, \u201cThe gut feel for me, and ultimately with the organization, was this is just the right time for a shift, for a new voice\u201d (\u201cFront Office,\u201d MLB Network Radio, 2\/1).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-franchises \">SHOCKING MOVE: THE ATHLETIC\u2019s Dan Hayes wrote Falvey\u2019s spit from the team \u201cleft Twins employees \u2018blindsided\u2019\u201d just 13 days before the start of spring training. Falvey and Tom Pohlad agreed on the departure after recognizing their personalities \u201cwere clashing.\u201d Sources said that the organization \u201cis scrambling to reorganize\u201d only 14 months after Falvey was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2024\/11\/12\/minnesota-twins-executive-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2024\/11\/12\/minnesota-twins-executive-changes\/\">promoted to run both baseball and business operations<\/a>, a move \u201coriginally intended to help the club\u2019s transition to a new ownership group in case the Twins were sold.\u201d In looking to replace Falvey, Tom Pohlad said that the team is \u201conly seeking a new head of business operations.\u201d Whereas former team control person Jim Pohlad and current advisory board member Joe Pohlad \u201cwere laid back,\u201d Tom \u201cintends to be more hands-on than his predecessors in trying to win back disillusioned fans.\u201d A source said that Falvey, \u201csensing future complications, thought an immediate departure would give a personnel group he\u2019s built over the past nine seasons a better chance to create its own history with Pohlad\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7010126\/2026\/01\/30\/derek-falvey-minnesota-twins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">THE ATHLETIC, 1\/30<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-franchises \">GREENER PASTURES: THE ATHLETIC\u2019s Aaron Gleeman wrote Falvey during his virtual exit interview hours following his split \u201cbehaved as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders, smiling and reminiscing and even telling the story of his awkward first interaction\u201d with late sportswriter Sid Hartman. Gleeman noted his sense is it is \u201cnot necessarily that Falvey wanted to leave the job,\u201d but rather that he had \u201cbeen pushed to a breaking point trying to do it well with shrinking resources and a new Pohlad at the helm.\u201d There was a \u201cbig disconnect\u201d there that \u201cno doubt has been weighing on Falvey, whose strong reputation across the league suggests he\u2019ll have no trouble landing a similarly prominent front-office role once he\u2019s ready to take on another challenge, where the deck isn\u2019t quite so stacked against him\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7010981\/2026\/01\/30\/twins-derek-falvey-mutual-breakup-pohlad-ownership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">THE ATHLETIC, 1\/30<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-franchises \">LEFT WONDERING: In Minnesota, Jim Souhan wrote Tom Pohlad has \u201cyet to say anything that would inspire confidence in a discerning fan\u201d following Falvey\u2019s exit. Tom Pohlad said that he \u201cexpects this year\u2019s team to win.\u201d Given the Twins\u2019 \u201crecent brain drain,\u201d the way they have \u201cperformed the past two seasons, and ownership\u2019s unwillingness to spend, that passes the smell test only if you enjoy the aroma of dead fish carcasses\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/minnesota-twins-front-office-changes-derek-falvey-out-jeremy-zoll-payroll-jim-souhan\/601574059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">MINNESOTA STAR TRIBUNE, 1\/30<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-franchises \">NOT YOUR FATHER\u2019S TWINS: In Minnesota, Patrick Reusse wrote the \u201cThird Generation\u201d &#8212; often \u201cfeared in the business world &#8212; was preparing to turn the old back-slapping, how-ya-been Twins organization into 100% business.\u201d He noted there was talk of a team sale, and then that passed, and then Joe Pohlad \u201cgot dumped in favor of older brother Tom.\u201d Joe Pohlad had \u201cgiven Falvey more power more than a year earlier,\u201d but Tom Pohlad\u2019s vision for the Twins\u2019 business future did not \u201cfit Falvey\u2019s, apparently.\u201d After 65 years, this is the \u201cnew, less-chummy Twins operation.\u201d Reusse wrote many \u201cwill applaud that as much-needed.\u201d Reusse: \u201cNot me.
