Even after putting together a decent rotation on paper, there’s a growing sense that the front office could still look for an upgrade, especially if the right arm becomes available at the right price. That’s why I questioned letting Ranger Suarez walk, but it was likely due to his price.

FanSided’s Matt Davis believes the Philadelphia Phillies could possibly make a move for right-hander Zac Gallen, a free agent of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Gallen should be rather cheap for who he is, but not too cheap.

“With less than two weeks before pitchers and catchers report for spring training, the Phillies may have an opportunity to snag a starting pitcher like former Arizona Diamondbacks’ starter Zac Gallen to bolster the rotation for the 2026 season… The Phillies would be looking for a bounce-back season, with optimism that the coaching staff can resurrect some of his previous success. Gallen has a career 3.58 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in seven MLB seasons.

“He’ll be entering his age-30 season in 2026, so there’s still a lot to work with before age catches up with him. The Phillies would be buying low on someone who also grew up in Somerdale, New Jersey. It would be a fun storyline if the Phillies see a real fit for Gallen,” Davis wrote.

Davis’ words highlight why Gallen is such a compelling option. A short time ago, he was viewed as one of the top starters in baseball, but had a rough year in 2025. A down stretch has quieted his market, but the stuff is still very good and to me, he’d be a steal.

Gallen is a classic buy-low candidate, as he’s a pitcher with a proven track record who may benefit from a change of scenery and a chance to win. The Phillies’ rotation also wouldn’t need him to be an ace.

The local connection also adds intrigue. Gallen’s New Jersey roots would make a move to Philadelphia something he wants to do. The ex-Bishop Eustace standout should find a home soon, and hopefully, it’s in Philly.

With spring training pretty much here, the Philadelphia Phillies could still use another arm or two.
