MassLive\u2019s Lauren Campbell and Chris Cotillo reported that the Red Sox never made a formal offer<\/a> to Su\u00e1rez, who chose a Reds reunion over joining the Pittsburgh Pirates. An MLB insider confirmed the main reason why Boston passed on pursuing an All-Star who swatted 49 home runs last season.<\/p>\n The Athletic\u2019s Jim Bowden claimed on \u201cFoul Territory\u201d that the Red Sox didn\u2019t make Su\u00e1rez an offer because of his defensive limitations<\/a>.<\/p>\n Su\u00e1rez\u2019s fielding shouldn\u2019t be a problem for the Reds, who can use him as a designated hitter with Gold Glove winner Ke\u2019Bryan Hayes patrolling third base.
