He underwent surgery in the offseason to repair his ankle.

L.A. claimed Mike Siani off waivers from the New York Yankees, and designated offseason addition Andy Ibañez in the process.

The Dodgers DFA’d Siani Jan. 21, and he is back with the team just two weeks later. Ibañez, on the other hand, signed a big-league deal with the Dodgers earlier in the offseason, and is now on waivers.

Nov 1, 2025; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Tommy Edman (25) hits an RBI sacrifice fly against the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth inning during game seven of the 2025 MLB World Series at Rogers Centre. Mandatory Credit: John E. Sokolowski-Imagn ImagesWhy is This Move Good for Tommy Edman?

The Dodgers signed Ibañez to a one-year deal, and having played plenty of second base in his time in the big leagues, he was clear insurance for Edman if he couldn’t play come Opening Day.

With Ibañez on the roster, the Dodgers had four players who could potentially play at second base on their 40-man roster: Edman, Ibañez, Miguel Rojas and Hyeseong Kim.

Ibañez is now out of the picture, leaving just Edman, Kim and Rojas to man the position. Edman is the Dodgers most likely choice here, as he played 66 games at the position last season — more than anyone else on the team.

Edman spoke about his recovery during the offseason at DodgerFest on Saturday.

“I got the boot off like two and a half weeks ago,” Edman said. “The last two and a half weeks I’ve been working into walking and pushing off it more. I got into like light skipping this week. Hopefully jogging next this next week. So you know, that’s kind of where I’m at right now and each step along the way, it’s kind of just being patient and making sure I’m hitting all the checkpoints with with no discomfort. And everything I’ve done so far has felt really good.”

Will Tommy Edman Only Play Second Base?

After the Dodgers added All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker, their outfield became clear for the 2026 season. Tucker will likely accompany Teoscar Hernandez and Andy Pages in the outfield. leaving no room for Edman.

The 30-year-old will likely remain as the Dodgers’ first-choice second baseman for the coming season, especially due to the situation with his ankle.

LA Baseball Report

Get the app for faster news

GET ×

The Los Angeles Dodgers made a roster move Tuesday, and their actions could mean Tommy Edman is close…

[2406
5,39,1165,4332,4333,774,57,3224,4331,4,880
0":"post-553982","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-los-angeles-dodgers","8":"tag-baseball","9":"tag-dodgers","10":"tag-la","11":"tag-la-dodgers","12":"tag-ladodgers","13":"tag-los-angeles","14":"tag-los-angeles-dodgers","15":"tag-losangeles","16":"tag-losangelesdodgers","17":"tag-mlb","18":"tag-tommy-edman
["GET
