{"id":557091,"date":"2026-02-06T03:07:30","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T03:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/557091\/"},"modified":"2026-02-06T03:07:30","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T03:07:30","slug":"emmanuel-clase-allegedly-helped-bettors-more-than-previously-believed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/557091\/","title":{"rendered":"Emmanuel Clase allegedly helped bettors more than previously believed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Emmanuel Clase\u2019s alleged betting scheme may get much deeper than originally thought.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The attorney for Luis Ortiz, Clase\u2019s co-conspirator and former Guardians teammate, wrote in a court filing that the star closer rigged pitches in at least 48 games over two years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/47842376\/guardians-clase-allegedly-rigged-pitches-48-games-document-says\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to a report from ESPN\u2019s David Purdum<\/a> on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The feds had only cited nine games when <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/09\/sports\/guardians-pitchers-emmanuel-clase-luis-ortiz-indicted-in-gambling-scheme-bombshell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accusing Clase of conspiring with bettors<\/a> in their November indictment, according to the outlet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38403683\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/AP_Sports_Betting_Arrests_30333-0872f-0.jpg\" alt=\"Emmanuel Clase with a determined expression, wearing a dark suit jacket and a diamond chain.\" class=\"wp-image-38403683\"  \/>Guardians\u2019 closer Emmanuel Clase arrives to federal court in the Brooklyn on Jan. 15, 2026. Georgalis, Ortiz\u2019s attorney, argued in the filing that his client has a \u201cmarkedly different level[s] of culpability\u201d in the gambling scheme, and is seeking to sever his case from Clase\u2019s, ESPN reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In November, federal investigators accused Clase of rigging pitches with a bettor as far back as May 2023, throwing particular pitches for balls in order for the bettor to win big money on prop bets.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz allegedly joined the scheme in June 2025, with both Guardians pitchers being given kickbacks from the winnings.<\/p>\n<p>The pair was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave by Major League Baseball in early July.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz\u2019s representatives have <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/09\/sports\/luis-ortizs-attorney-fires-back-after-weak-gambling-charges\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">argued that he\u2019s done no wrongdoing<\/a>, writing in a statement after the indictment was unsealed, \u201cThere is no credible evidence Luis knowingly did anything other than to try to win games with every pitch and every inning. Luis looks forward to fighting these charges in court.
