The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/03\/sports\/inside-the-yankees-search-for-a-righty-bat\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:New York Post\u2019s Joel Sherman;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">New York Post\u2019s Joel Sherman<\/a>\u00a0reports the New York Yankees are shopping for a right-handed bat to add some balance to their lineup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ideal would be someone who could play multiple positions among first base, third base and the outfield while limiting strikeouts,\u201d Sherman writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn ideal candidate for the Yankees would be Nico Hoerner,\u201d Sherman adds. \u201cThe Cubs were open to moving him at points during this offseason, especially after the signing of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bregmal01.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Alex Bregman;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Alex Bregman<\/a>\u00a0that could allow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/shawma01.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Matt Shaw;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Matt Shaw<\/a>\u00a0to shift to second base.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmong his many assets, Hoerner is an elite defensive second baseman, an outstanding baserunner and someone who hit .369 vs. lefties last year with just a 5.4 strikeout percentage,\u201d Sherman adds.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he is due $12 million for 2026 before becoming a free agent, and the Cubs would have to get a strong return to consider dealing him,\u201d Sherman concludes.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t count out the Red Sox, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/timbhealey\/status\/2018443750939439248\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Boston Globe\u2019s Tim Healey;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Boston Globe\u2019s Tim Healey<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Red Sox\u2019 best infield option paying up for Hoerner or Shaw? Would take guts,\u201d Healey writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoerner especially would be proof of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/redsox\/team\/front-office\/craig-breslow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:(Craig) Breslow\u2019s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">(Craig) Breslow\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0\u2018focus on \u201926, not the future\u2019 approach,\u201d Healey adds.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old Hoerner made his debut in 2019 with the Cubs. He\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoernni01.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:played eight seasons in Chicago;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">played eight seasons in Chicago<\/a>, posting a respectable .282 batting average.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Hoerner won his first Gold Glove Award in 2023, and added a second last year, which was his best all-around effort in the majors.<\/p>\n<p>He posted a career-high 6.2 WAR last season while hitting .297 in 156 games.
