{"id":558126,"date":"2026-02-06T17:11:40","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T17:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/558126\/"},"modified":"2026-02-06T17:11:40","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T17:11:40","slug":"the-tampa-bay-rays-are-edging-their-way-to-a-new-stadium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/558126\/","title":{"rendered":"The Tampa Bay Rays are edging their way to a new stadium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Let\u2019s switch things up today and talk about a new baseball stadium in the Tampa Bay area that might actually get built.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The Tampa Bay Rays have had quite the stadium saga. When they were created, they began play in Tropicana Field, originally built as the Florida Coast Sundome in 1989, when the area was hoping to lure a team to move there from another city. The White Sox were one of those teams. It didn\u2019t happen and Tampa Bay got an expansion team in 1998. The dome was outdated even then, and got worse over time. Then the roof got ripped off in Hurricane Milton and the Rays had to play the 2025 season at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Money was allocated to repair the roof at the Trop and the Rays will move back in for this season. In fact, the Cubs will be their first opponent. The teams will meet for a three-game series beginning April 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Over the decades there have been quite a number of proposals for a new stadium for the Rays, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stadiumpage.com\/concepts\/MLDT_R.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this cool-looking stadium with a sail-like roof<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stadiumpage.com\/concepts\/STPETE23.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this one<\/a>, which was supposed to be built near where the Trop now stands. That fell through due to disputes over who was going to fund it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The Rays were recently sold to a Florida-based group who announced they were committed to finding a new stadium site in the Tampa Bay area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/sports\/rays\/2026\/02\/05\/first-look-rays-proposed-stadium-hillsborough-college-site\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">per Marc Topkin in the Tampa Bay Times<\/a>, they have found such a site and released renderings of a potential new stadium. You can see one of the renderings at the top of this post. There are more renderings at the article link (and also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.draysbay.com\/stadium-saga\/87080\/rays-release-first-new-stadium-renderings-for-hillsborough-college-dale-mabry-site\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here at our SB Nation Rays site DRays Bay<\/a>), but here\u2019s a potential stumbling block:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">Tampa Sports Authority CEO Eric Hart told the Tampa Bay Times last week that the team had estimated the cost of the stadium at $2.3 billion. Hagan said Wednesday \u201cthat number is not firm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">Per county documents, the Rays say they will pay at least 50% of the stadium cost, plus cover construction over-runs, future repairs, maintenance and renovations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/hillsborough\/2026\/02\/02\/rays-tampabay-hillsborough-stadium-ballpark-deal-mlb-baseball-desantis-manfred\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Rays are asking the county to cover the other 50%<\/a> through various funding sources with potential other contributions from the city of Tampa and the state. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/hillsborough\/2026\/02\/04\/tampabayrays-mlb-baseball-stadium-hillsborough-tampa-desantis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">commission voted Wednesday to proceed with the negotiations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Ah, ha. Let\u2019s see, half of $2.3 billion is $1.15 billion and that\u2019s an awful lot of public money for a stadium. We know, from decades of such payments, that they never, ever pay off for the locality that provides the money. A perfect example is the new stadium in Atlanta, which got $300 million of public money from Cobb County, Georgia \u2014 which then ran into a shortfall looking for money for new libraries and other things for the public good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">When things like this are proposed, I always check out Neil DeMause\u2019s excellent Field of Schemes site to see what he has to say about this one, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldofschemes.com\/2026\/02\/05\/23651\/hillsborough-county-considers-raiding-infrastructure-fund-to-give-1-15b-to-rays\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DeMause does not disappoint<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">The Tampa Sports Authority, meanwhile, also met this week to discuss the Rays plans, and revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/sports\/rays\/2026\/02\/04\/tampa-sports-authority-rays-hillsborough-college\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it will eventually release two, let\u2019s call them \u201creports\u201d,<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldofschemes.com\/2022\/02\/08\/18482\/report-tampa-stadium-for-rays-would-cost-800m-hold-only-27000-fans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">their favorite consultants Skanska and AECOM<\/a> \u2014 one on whether the $2.3 billion stadium will actually cost $2.3 billion, the other reviewing the Rays\u2019 own economic projections for the project. (The AECOM report is expected to be ready by April 1, the Skanska one will be sometime later.) Board member Andy Scaglione also asked if anyone had appraised the value of the Dale Mabry campus (nope) and how much money was available in hotel tax funds for tourism spending that could go toward a stadium ($11-12 million, which won\u2019t go far toward that $1.15 billion nut).<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">So, this one\u2019s still a long way from being approved\/completed\/actually built.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Incidentally, the Dale Mabry campus noted in the Field of Schemes article is directly adjacent to Steinbrenner Field and Raymond James Stadium, where the NFL\u2019s Tampa Bay Buccaneers play:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"_1eezmj01\" href=\"https:\/\/platform.bleedcubbieblue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-06-at-6.01.37%E2%80%AFAM.png?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;crop=0,0,100,100\" data-pswp-height=\"1386\" data-pswp-width=\"2132\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\"><img alt=\"\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"fill\" class=\"w91vxg0\" style=\"position:absolute;height:100%;width:100%;left:0;top:0;right:0;bottom:0;color:transparent;background-size:cover;background-position:50% 50%;background-repeat:no-repeat;background-image:url(&quot;data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg' %3E%3Cfilter id='b' color-interpolation-filters='sRGB'%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3CfeColorMatrix values='1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 100 -1' result='s'\/%3E%3CfeFlood x='0' y='0' width='100%25' height='100%25'\/%3E%3CfeComposite operator='out' in='s'\/%3E%3CfeComposite in2='SourceGraphic'\/%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3C\/filter%3E%3Cimage width='100%25' height='100%25' x='0' y='0' preserveAspectRatio='none' style='filter: url(%23b);' href='data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAEAAAABCAQAAAC1HAwCAAAAC0lEQVR42mN8+R8AAtcB6oaHtZcAAAAASUVORK5CYII='\/%3E%3C\/svg%3E&quot;)\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-06-at-6.01.37\u202fAM.png\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Raymond James Stadium is the green area just south of Tampa Bay Blvd. and east of the Dale Mabry Highway. As you can see, it\u2019s also immediately adjacent to the Tampa International Airport, which, according to the Tampa Bay Times article, will mean the stadium will have to have some sort of height restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Topkin\u2019s article also notes this:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">In releasing the renderings, the Rays also said they will start collecting nonrefundable $19.98 deposits from fans \u201cto secure early access to seating in the new ballpark.\u201d (Current season members don\u2019t have to pay and will receive \u201cthe highest priority\u201d access.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">More information on the deposit plan and on the project overall is available at <a href=\"https:\/\/newballpark.raysbaseball.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">newballpark.raysbaseball.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">The Rays are pitching the ballpark plan as part of a massive live\/work\/learn\/play complex on the 130-acre site that will be privately financed by the team, in what Hillsborough County Commission Chair Ken Hagan said would be an investment of $8 billion to $10 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">This is in line with many other teams, including the Cubs, who want to own entertainment options near their stadiums, as a revenue generator that isn\u2019t subject to revenue sharing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">This project is a long way from being funded and constructed, but it does seem to be one that might actually happen, as opposed to previous Tampa Bay area proposals that failed. The location in Tampa is, at least, more accessible than Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Lastly, there\u2019s this, from Topkin\u2019s article:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">The team admittedly has aggressive plans to open the new facility for the 2029 season. Its current lease at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg runs through the 2028 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Clock\u2019s ticking. That gives them less than three years.
