The hearing, arguably the \u201cmost consequential\u201d in the history of MLB\u2019s arbitration system, saw a panel side with Skubal to earn a $32M salary in 2026. MLB\u2019s CBA is set to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/11\/18\/mlb-owners-meetings-will-feature-discussions-on-labor-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/11\/18\/mlb-owners-meetings-will-feature-discussions-on-labor-strategy\/\">expire Dec. 1<\/a>, with owners \u201cexpected to argue in favor of a salary cap\u201d but players \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/12\/05\/mlbpas-tony-clark-readies-players-for-potential-work-stoppage-cba-negotiations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/12\/05\/mlbpas-tony-clark-readies-players-for-potential-work-stoppage-cba-negotiations\/\">seeking more equitable changes to MLB\u2019s financial system<\/a>.\u201d Before Thursday, no pitcher had \u201ceclipsed\u201d former MLBer David Price\u2019s arbitration win in 11 years. Now Skubal is \u201cone of the highest-paid pitchers in the game,\u201d and his case \u201ccould raise the arbitration ceiling for star pitchers,\u201d such as Pirates P Paul Skenes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7019362\/2026\/02\/05\/tarik-skubal-arbitration-32-million-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">THE ATHLETIC, 2\/5<\/a>). Stavenhagen in a separate piece wrote whether many players \u201ccan actually compare themselves to Skubal remains to be seen,\u201d but a decision that \u201csettled the largest gap in arbitration history could raise the ceiling\u201d for future pitchers. Tense as arbitration hearings can be, the sides \u201cseemed to walk away amicably.\u201d The Tigers reportedly have \u201cno plans to trade Skubal simply because he is earning a higher wage\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7025520\/2026\/02\/05\/tarik-skubal-tigers-arbitration-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">THE ATHLETIC, 2\/5<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-franchises \">CASE STUDY: In Detroit, Chris McCosky wrote Skubal\u2019s arbitration case \u201cwill be studied and picked apart for at the least the next year,\u201d heading into CBA discussions. The Tigers \u201cwill be scrutinized for their comparatively low salary bid,\u201d but there \u201cwas little to no actual negotiations between\u201d Tigers President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris and agent Scott Boras leading up to the filing date. Still, it is \u201chard to see the Tigers as losers here.\u201d They will head to camp next week with \u201carguably the best one-two punch at the top of their rotation in baseball\u201d with Skubal and P Framber Valdez, who signed a three-year, $115M contract this week (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/sports\/mlb\/tigers\/2026\/02\/05\/tarik-skubal-wins-arbitration-case-vs-detroit-tigers-will-earn-32-million\/88492151007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DETROIT NEWS, 2\/5<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-franchises \">TIME TO SPEND: In Detroit, Tony Paul noted Harris repeatedly has said that \u201cwhen the time was right,\u201d owner Chris Ilitch \u201cwould provide him the resources to spend.\u201d By signing Valdez, followed by Skubal\u2019s historic win in arbitration Thursday, the Tigers \u201ccould be carrying a top-10 payroll for the first time in nearly a decade\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/sports\/mlb\/tigers\/2026\/02\/05\/tarik-skubal-framber-valdez-send-detroit-tigers-payroll-soaring\/88533009007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DETROIT NEWS, 2\/5<\/a>). In Detroit, Bob Wojnowski wrote Valdez\u2019s signing is about \u201chaving insurance if Skubal indeed leaves as a free agent after the season, as many expect.\u201d But it is also about \u201cstriking now, shattering a perception of frugality and shaping a new one.\u201d This \u201cwas a bold, bullish move\u201d by Ilitch and Harris. With Skubal\u2019s representation \u201callegedly seeking\u201d a $400M contract over seven or eight years, the Tigers \u201copted for a more-reasonable &#8212; although still expensive &#8212; option.\u201d They reportedly \u201chave no intention of trading their superstar,\u201d and instead \u201cwill go all-in with Skubal for a shot at a championship\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/sports\/columnists\/bob-wojnowski\/2026\/02\/05\/wojo-serious-money-elite-talent-put-detroit-tigers-in-win-now-mode\/88525128007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DETROIT NEWS, 2\/5<\/a>). And make no mistake, the Tigers and LRD suffered a major blow when the panel ruled in Skubal\u2019s favor Thursday.\u201d Skubal, a member of MLBPA\u2019s exec board, \u201cwas the perfect player to test the boundaries of the system\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7025747\/2026\/02\/05\/tigers-mlb-tarik-skubal-salary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">THE ATHLETIC, 2\/5<\/a>).
