But, they might not be done.

While they’re keeping tabs on some of the top free agents, the Mets have some extra ammo to swing a trade. One of their best trade chips is infielder Brett Baty, who no longer has a spot after the Bo Bichette signing.

ESPN’s David Schoenfield proposed a very fun trade using Baty with the Boston Red Sox that would land the Mets a Gold Glove outfielder in 26-year-old slugger Wilyer Abreu.

Mets trade proposal sends Brett Baty to Red Sox for Wilyer Abreu

Schoenfield’s proposed trade would be a straight one-for-one swap, with the Mets sending Baty to the Red Sox for Abreu. This trade, as Schoenfield writes, would be a “perfect match.”

Abreu and Baty are both 26 years old, and they each are under club control for the next four years. They’re pre-arbitration, and very valuable to their respective clubs.

While Abreu has shown more in the Majors, with 7.3 bWAR in three seasons compared to Baty’s 3.1 in the same amount of time, the fits for both teams make a lot of sense.

The Red Sox, after losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs, need an infielder. Sending Baty for Abreu, as Schoenfield’s proposal suggests, would be a coup for the Mets.

If this could actually be a completed trade, the Mets should have no qualms about doing it. While they might have a weaker long-term solution in the infield, the upgrade of Abreu in the outfield is more than worth it.

More MLB news:

Mets trade proposal sends Brett Baty to Red Sox for two-time Gold Glove outfield slugger originally appeared on…

[2396
72,5,88,48,358,24,28384,753,1417,999,228,101,33901,4,1690,61,2548,4203,10,73731,606
post-559065","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york-mets","tag-alex-bregman","tag-baseball","tag-bo-bichette","tag-boston-red-sox","tag-brett-baty","tag-chicago-cubs","tag-david-schoenfield","tag-freddy-peralta","tag-gold-glove","tag-luis-robert-jr","tag-mark-vientos","tag-mets","tag-mets-trade","tag-mlb","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-mets","tag-newyork","tag-newyorkmets","tag-pirates","tag-sending-baty","tag-wilyer-abreu
["GET
