The New York Mets<\/a> have been one of the busiest teams this offseason, adding a ton of talent all across the roster. But, they might not be done.<\/p>\n

While they’re keeping tabs on some of the top free agents, the Mets have some extra ammo to swing a trade. One of their best trade chips is infielder Brett Baty, who no longer has a spot after the Bo Bichette signing.<\/p>\n

ESPN’s David Schoenfield<\/a> proposed a very fun trade using Baty with the Boston Red Sox<\/a> that would land the Mets a Gold Glove outfielder in 26-year-old slugger Wilyer Abreu.<\/p>\n

Schoenfield’s proposed trade would be a straight one-for-one swap, with the Mets sending Baty to the Red Sox for Abreu. This trade, as Schoenfield writes, would be a “perfect match.”<\/p>\n

Abreu and Baty are both 26 years old, and they each are under club control for the next four years. They’re pre-arbitration, and very valuable to their respective clubs.<\/p>\n

While Abreu has shown more in the Majors, with 7.3 bWAR in three seasons compared to Baty’s 3.1 in the same amount of time, the fits for both teams make a lot of sense.<\/p>\n

The Red Sox, after losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs<\/a>, need an infielder. Baty would be a perfect option to go after.<\/p>\n

The Mets, meanwhile, could use some outfield help instead of fully relying on Carson Benge as a full-time starter next season.<\/p>\n

From the Mets’ angle, their infield is crowded, and while it might not be so in 2027, going all-in for the 2026 season is already what the team has done with the Bichette, Freddy Peralta, and Luis Robert Jr. additions.<\/p>\n

Abreu would be an incredible get for the Mets, as he’s coming off a solid 3.2 bWAR season with 22 home runs, 69 RBIs, and a .786 OPS and 116 OPS+ in 115 games for Boston last year.<\/p>\n

Combined with a second consecutive Gold Glove, Abreu is a clear top trade target for the Mets this offseason. Sending Baty for Abreu, as Schoenfield’s proposal suggests, would be a coup for the Mets.<\/p>\n

If this could actually be a completed trade, the Mets should have no qualms about doing it. While they might have a weaker long-term solution in the infield, the upgrade of Abreu in the outfield is more than worth it.<\/p>\n
