{"id":559566,"date":"2026-02-07T13:34:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T13:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/559566\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T13:34:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T13:34:13","slug":"new-red-sox-prospect-traded-to-boston-when-plane-to-white-sox-camp-had-just-gotten-in-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/559566\/","title":{"rendered":"New Red Sox prospect traded to Boston when plane to White Sox camp \u2018had just gotten in air\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CYOJMGDVSZGLJMYOJZVN4WDSIU\">Pitching prospect Gage Ziehl was traveling Sunday from Florida to Arizona, heading to White Sox spring training camp when he found out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/\">Red Sox<\/a> traded for him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JVJ77DUL6NHTLLXRB65FW4YD6I\">\u201cLiterally the plane wheels had just gotten up in the air, and I got a message,\u201d Ziehl said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CJLTX66WSJA2BEGPI2FUDN5MCQ\">Boston received Ziehl and a player to be named later in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-trade-jordan-hicks-pitching-prospect-to-white-sox-in-salary-dump-righty-prospect-coming-back.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/02\/red-sox-trade-jordan-hicks-pitching-prospect-to-white-sox-in-salary-dump-righty-prospect-coming-back.html\">trade that sent reliever Jordan Hicks, prospect David Sandlin and two players to be named later to the White Sox<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GCZJ77T4U5AQBHXLSNDN3HK3VA\">The White Sox train in Phoenix. Ziehl had to remain on the flight for another five hours knowing he was just going to fly right back to Florida.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LWGVXNBUVVBYTOIHGFJAPOIVWY\">The 22-year-old righty, who\u2019s listed at 6-foot, 223 pounds, had also shipped his car to Arizona a couple days before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q7XEIE3YF5A45LEQJ2MBUNZWP4\">\u201cSo that was fun,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y3XIX373CZGDNG2PTTXF3DZDBM\">He wasn\u2019t in Arizona long. He boarded a plane to Fort Myers the next day and had his car shipped back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HNSMHX4AZBGRTBABRHWKDMIGXU\">\u201cThe Red Sox coordinated a flight for me. So that was nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GJCEWVBFMJAK5HMNE3C77WG4WY\">Baseball America had Ziehl ranked the White Sox\u2019 No. 21 overall prospect. In 2025, Ziehl posted a 4.12 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 90 strikeouts and 19 walks in 22 outings (21 starts) between Low-A, High-A and Double-A.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UPAEPFDIVNBEPDDGI27KT6A6CA\">Control and command are strengths. He has averaged just 1.6 walks per nine innings in his first pro season after averaging 2.6 in his 227 \u2154 innings at Miami.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UBEUTDIOKRBM3M7RVJ6VMOCN4A\">An eventful Sunday marked the second time Ziehl has been traded in his brief career. The Yankees initially drafted him in the fourth round (119th overall) out of Miami in 2024. New York traded him to Chicago on July 30, 2025, for outfielder Austin Slater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VIAG6LBLBZDSTG3KAFBGCPHYAI\">Baseball America ranked the righty as the Yankees\u2019 13th overall prospect entering the 2025 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y2K4XZIQ4RHOVKXL7MDNV27BSE\">\u201cI definitely would say it was a little easier (than the first time being traded),\u201d Ziehl said. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely not easy, per se, but sometimes you just got to go with the flow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CV6FDRYFMNGOROZSL62YM35R6Y\">Ziehl\u2019s two best pitches are his sweeper and cutter. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/players\/19669-gage-ziehl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/players\/19669-gage-ziehl\/\">Baseball America<\/a> grades his sweeper 55 (above average) on its 20-80 grading scale and his cutter 50 (major league average). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/players\/19669-gage-ziehl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/players\/19669-gage-ziehl\/\">The prospect website noted in his scouting report<\/a>: \u201cZiehl relies on his mid-80s sweeper and 89 mph cutter, throwing those two pitches nearly 70% of the time with near-even distribution. His sweeper has above-average spin rates and is his best swing-and-miss offering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GMIUSUQ7WNBRDAKVWRETDKIPRY\">Ziehl said he began throwing his sweeper in high school and continued to throw it his first two years at Miami. But he lost feel for it during his final year with the Hurricanes and changed to a regular slider.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HL27Y7KPONFHJAGAO2OGUVCXTM\">He returned to the sweeper during his first full season of professional baseball in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RZAAZNNKAFHBVG6UUHLXBULODY\">\u201cI kind of lost feel for it, to be honest and I don\u2019t know why,\u201d he said. \u201cIt could have been a mechanical thing. But yeah, I was able to bring it back last year, thankfully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"X4THU72S5RCHNCVSBAJWVSEDLU\">He learned his cutter during his brief time in the Yankees organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LMTPTZ2EQFAQDO7TTKX6AVZS7Y\">\u201cHonestly, I think it (cutter) grades out the best out of all my pitches,\u201d he said. \u201cBut they both have a lot of glove-side movement. And really with the cutter, it\u2019s a huge weak-contact and ground-ball-inducing pitch for me, which has helped me out like tremendously against left-handed hitters. And then my sweeper has just been a good weapon against righties. I don\u2019t throw it too much against lefties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OU3A4HVS4VASFMIUEXFOW5AFGE\">He threw his fastball only 13% of the time in 2025, according to Baseball America. But he has made some adjustments to it, which might result in him throwing it more often in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K6YVKETY2JDIVBB2UEMBX6WQU4\">\u201cLast year, we were trying to make it a cut-ride fastball and get the vert up a little bit,\u201d Ziehl said. \u201cWhat that ended up doing is just causing me to cut the ball more. And so that\u2019s why the percentage on it was so low is because it was basically a worse version of my cutter. And I attribute that to my trunk tilt just getting me into this position that I would cut everything a little more than I wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XJDKXAIC6VHLLITM4JELWWK4RQ\">He worked on mechanics at Cressey Sports Performance in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida this offseason to decrease the cut on his fastball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q2M73HQZ4RCU7BHEL4QZVPMGIY\">\u201cBeing a little bit taller &#8230; which has helped me get a better approach angle and made my fastball not cut like it did last year,\u201d Ziehl said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JEKLABM5FBBO5FUJUNA6S7MTN4\">His fastball last year had about 15 inches of vertical movement and was right on the zero horizontal line. He said his fastball now is anywhere from 14-17 inches vertically and eight horizontally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5PHD5A3KO5ASPMIB2J2AN3UEY4\">\u201cThe approach angle should be a lot better than it was last year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"333LTQPG3NDDLNALSUGG4BFWZ4\">He said his velocity was down last year probably because of how infrequently he threw it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RCI3FCITMVHVXNTBJHJ4I7STVQ\">\u201cI was barely throwing it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut back in college, I sat around 93 my last year. And I think with where I\u2019m at right now, I\u2019ll probably be around there just because I\u2019ll be able to be a little bit more behind the ball instead of around it and cutting it like I was last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YDYGQSC6ABASPGAJAN4QKLJZ3U\">Ziehl also mixes in a changeup and curveball. Like the cutter, he also learned the curveball while with the Yankees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SZ5A3DY3S5GOZEAUVFMIWZAATA\">\u201cThey\u2019re mostly used towards left-handed hitters, but I do occasionally mix them in to right-handed hitters,\u201d Ziehl said. \u201cCurveball was something that I brought up to my pitching coach with the Yankees last year, kind of midway through the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SYO4JDYUVVBFPGK23Z7XKOQFH4\">Ziehl realized his three main pitches all moved toward the same side of the plate, so he suggested trying a curveball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GTT6EUXMIRECHMGWVL23CHISX4\">\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Why not try and throw a curveball and just see where it goes?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s been a good pitch for me. I think it sits around negative-seven on the vert, which has helped me get under some bats of lefties.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HEMHDQSZEJEJFD6UDKJLSDTIOA\">He said he has been tinkering with his kick changeup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UYTVK5FKZ5HLLPZBDTXMCTXEQI\">\u201cIt gets really good numbers when I get it around the zone,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a little bit difficult last year with where my slot was, just locating it.
