But if you want some optimism to go with the West Palm Beach sunshine, we can blow some of that sunshine up your hot stove! Yes, we can cherry-pick the outliers of media analysts who not only think the Nats had an A- offseason, but also the \u21166 farm system in all of baseball in another report. <\/p>\n<p>Beauty is in the eye\u2019s of the beholder, and former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6989271\/2026\/02\/02\/mlb-offseason-grades-takeaways-2026-predictions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nats\u2019 GM Jim Bowden<\/a> believes the Nats achieved their offseason objectives of trading <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gorema01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">MacKenzie Gore<\/a> for some top prospects as well as acquiring what Bowden called a full-time player, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fordha01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Harry Ford<\/a>, for a reliever in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/ferrejo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Jose A. Ferrer<\/a>. On top of that, Bowden liked the other short-term moves while keeping some cash for potential contract extensions for core players. Bowden gave an A- to the Nationals in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6989271\/2026\/02\/02\/mlb-offseason-grades-takeaways-2026-predictions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Athletic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Nationals made three significant trades under their new front office leadership. In the first two, they acquired one of the best offensive catching prospects in the game, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fordha01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Harry Ford<\/a>, and one of the best pitching prospects in the Red Sox farm system, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=perale000lui&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Luis Perales<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best trade the Nationals made was the swap with the Rangers that landed them 2025 first-round pick <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=fien--000gav&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Gavin Fien<\/a>, who now becomes their long-term answer at shortstop. In addition to Fien, they added four more prospects in that deal, including right-hander <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=rosari002ale,rosari004ale&amp;search=Alejandro+Rosario&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Alejandro Rosario<\/a>, who has a strong arsenal and upside, though he will miss the 2026 season as he deals with a torn UCL.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bowden wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6989271\/2026\/02\/02\/mlb-offseason-grades-takeaways-2026-predictions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Athletic<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The third name in the Gore trade,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=fitz-g000dev&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Devin Fitz-Gerald<\/a>, 20, has been ranked by some as the best prospect in this trade. He was Texas\u2019 \u21168 prospect according to Baseball America. Jeff Passan of ESPN wrote,\u00a0\u201cEvaluators love Fitz-Gerald.\u201d\u00a0He hit .302 with seven doubles, six homers, 20 RBI, 28 walks, eight stolen bases, and 33 runs scored in 41 games between the Arizona Complex League and Single-A Hickory in his first professional year in 2025 until he had a shoulder injury that ended his 2025 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>On farm system rankings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6998285\/2026\/01\/29\/top-farm-systems-mlb-brewers-dodgers-mariners\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Keith Law of The Athletic<\/a>, just gave the Nats a \u21166 overall ranking and a Tier-2 grade of all farm systems in baseball. Law is bullish on the Nats, and he lives in Wilmington, Delaware which gives him the ability to see just about every prospect make it through the Nats\u2019 complex there. He is also a short drive to Salisbury, Maryland to see Single-A prospects who pass through that facility. And of course Law travels to showcases and big games to see the top prospects before they are drafted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Nationals have certainly restocked their system in the last seven months, trading <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gorema01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">MacKenzie Gore<\/a> for five prospects, four of whom are on their top-20; trading <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/ferrejo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Jose A. Ferrer<\/a> for a former top-100 prospect, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fordha01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Harry Ford<\/a>; and picking up four more guys on their Top-20 in smaller trades last July \u2014 all on top of having the \u21161 pick in the 2025 draft, which they used to take prep shortstop <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=willit000eli&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Eli Willits<\/a>. On paper, it\u2019s a lot of talent, but it\u2019s also a lot of underperforming talent, at least relative to expectations when those players were drafted or first emerged as real prospects, giving the new front office a significant challenge in their first year on the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Law wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6998285\/2026\/01\/29\/top-farm-systems-mlb-brewers-dodgers-mariners\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Athletic<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And you might be surprised by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7022510\/2026\/02\/06\/washington-nationals-2026-top-100-prospects-keith-law\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Law\u2019s new Top-20<\/a> farm system ranking for the Nationals. As you would expect, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=willit000eli&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Eli Willits<\/a> tops the charts, and Law has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=fien--000gav&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Gavin Fien<\/a> at \u21162, followed by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=king--000sea&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Seaver King<\/a> to give you a Top-3 of talent. And they all made his Top-100 prospect\u2019s list in baseball.<\/p>\n<p>The next three names on Law\u2019s list, and just outside his Top-1oo, make sense with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=sykora000tra&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Travis Sykora<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fordha01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Harry Ford<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=susana000jar&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jarlin Susana<\/a>. And Law is very high on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=peters006sam&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sam Petersen<\/a> and anyone who saw him in the Arizona Fall League saw those flashes of talent as I commented in my reports from the AFL. Also on Law\u2019s list as a surprise is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=jones-000sir&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\">Sir Jamison Jones<\/a>. He didn\u2019t make any Top-30 lists other than Law\u2019s list.<\/p>\n<p>Law doesn\u2019t put the Dominican Summer League (DSL) names on his list. And one name that stood above all others was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=german003mar&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Marconi German<\/a>. Devin Fitz-Gerald, INF<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Eric Cross (@EricCrossMLB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EricCrossMLB\/status\/2014436018879926741?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">January 22, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And Kiley McDaniel of ESPN, has NINE Nats in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/47684209\/top-100-mlb-prospects-2026-kiley-mcdaniel-101-200-rankings-superlatives\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Top-200 rankings<\/a>. On average, an MLB team would have 6.7 players on a Top-200 if these rankings went strictly by dividing 200 by 30. And it doesn\u2019t work that way. This is where the Nats have been making progress. And only the Los Angeles Dodgers (12), Milwaukee Brewers (12), Cleveland Guardians (11), Minnesota Twins (10), and Tampa Bay Rays (10) have more players ranked in their Top-200 per ESPN. <\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">And great work <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kileymcd?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@kileymcd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/espn?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@ESPN<\/a> expands his top prospects list to a Top-200:<\/p>\n<p>41. Fien was the \u211612 pick in last year\u2019s draft, and 11 spots after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=willit000eli&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Eli Willits<\/a>\u00a0was taken at \u21161 overall by the Washington Nationals.<\/p>\n<p>This duo of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=willit000eli&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Willits<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=fien--000gav&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fien<\/a> were teammates on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/share.google\/EOQZ8AjGFklFxdtKZ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">USA Baseball 18U National Team<\/a>\u00a0that won the gold medal at the Baseball World Cup on August 12, 2024, and then they flew from that game in Panama to San Diego to compete on opposite rosters just two days later in the 2024 MLB High School All-Star Game. Less than 1\u00bd years later, they are teammates in pro ball.<\/p>\n<p>Back to August 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=willit000eli&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Willits<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=fien--000gav&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fien<\/a> went from the international stage to this premier national game in San Diego. The two teenagers showed their skills in that All-Star game too. Fien was named the Most Valuable Player of that showcase invitational game for the best non-senior high school players in the country. And Willits showed his tools by manufacturing the first run of the game after he worked a walk then stole two bases and scored on an errant throw by the catcher.<\/p>\n<p>Of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/2024-mlb-high-school-all-american-game-standouts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Top-5 ranked stars<\/a>\u00a0of that high school All-Star game, four of them can now be directly tied to the Washington Nationals.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=fien--000gav&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Fien<\/a>, as the MVP of the game, was ranked as the \u21161 star of the game, and three of the next four standouts of that game, were all drafted by the Nats with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=sime--000mig&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Miguel Sime<\/a>\u00a0Jr.,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=pike--000mas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mason Pike<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=willit000eli&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.talknats.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-01-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Willits<\/a>\u00a0all selected by Washington. As you might remember, Pike indicated he was going to college which affected his draft status that dropped him to the 19th round pick by the Nats, and he did choose to go to college at Oregon State. Also in that game was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=harmon000lan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Landon Harmon<\/a>, who was the top drafted pitcher by the Nats.<\/p>\n<p>Again, these writings might have been too optimistic for you.
