When Alex Bregman signed with the Chicago Cubs<\/a>, a glaring hole opened at third base for the Boston Red Sox<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Presently, the AL East club has Marcelo Mayer as its top third base option. By no means is Mayer not a good player, but FanGraphs projects <\/a>the Red Sox to finish 28th in WAR at third base this season.<\/p>\n

According to The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey<\/a>, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is searching to add an infielder before spring training. The Red Sox were one of the clubs reported to have interest in Eugenio Suarez before he re-joined the Cincinnati Reds<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Breslow could call the Mets<\/p>\n

With Bo Bichette, Jorge Polanco, and Brett Baty, the New York Mets<\/a>have a surplus of infielders <\/a>who can play third base. The Red Sox, of course, have a handful of outfielders who all deserve playing time but might not get it.<\/p>\n

ESPN’s David Schoenfield believes a one-for-one swap of Baty and Wilyer Abreu would be beneficial for both clubs.<\/p>\n

“The Red Sox have four starting outfielders and need a third baseman,” Schoenfield wrote Friday<\/a>. “Plus, these two are a perfect match in service time and projected value: Both are still pre-arbitration with four years of team control remaining. FanGraphs’ ZiPS projects 2.4 WAR for Abreu and 2.6 for Baty.”<\/p>\n

Boston may prefer to keep Abreu, a back-to-back Gold Glove winner who hit a career high 22 home runs in 2025. But with Ceddanne Rafaela, Jarren Duran, and Roman Anthony, this may be a move they can afford to make.<\/p>\n
