{"id":561994,"date":"2026-02-09T05:03:34","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T05:03:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/561994\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T05:03:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T05:03:34","slug":"red-sox-top-prospect-named-breakout-candidate-heading-into-2026-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/561994\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Sox Top Prospect Named Breakout Candidate Heading Into 2026 Season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Boston Red Sox enter the 2026 season with hopes of reaching the playoffs again, but this year, going on a deeper run.<\/p>\n<p>Boston has been active this offseason, as the Red Sox landed the likes of Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez, and Willson Contreras, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Yet, heading into the season, Red Sox reporter Andrew Simon of MLB.com believes top prospect Marcelo Mayer is a key to success, as he believes the prospect will have a breakout season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven early this offseason, Mayer looked like a key to Boston\u2019s 2026 season,\u201d Simon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/how-the-red-sox-can-exceed-their-2026-projection?msockid=10fa252057fc61fb25033324560860c7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:wrote;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">wrote <\/a>in a piece published on Sunday. \u201cBut his importance has only increased as the offseason has gone on, with Bregman departing in free agency and Craig Breslow\u2019s front office thus far being unable to land another impact player to handle second or third base. \u2026<\/p>\n<p>With some big league experience under his belt and better health (Mayer also sustained a\u00a0season-ending right wrist injury\u00a0in 2025), the 23-year-old could take a significant step forward in \u201826 and provide the Sox with some much-needed infield stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayer appeared in 44 games last season and showed flashes of success. He hit .228 with four home runs and 10 RBIs.
