The Chicago White Sox<\/a> had a great offseason, in which general manager Chris Getz added pieces to pair with the young core that is forming. <\/p>\n

Recently signing right-hander Erick Fedde to fill out the rotation, the White Sox still have some room to spend and add at least one more piece. However, Getz seems content with the roster he\u2019s constructed, saying, \u201cWe do feel good about the group we have in here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got flexibility, we do. But we do feel good about the group we have in here,\u201d Getz said to MLB.com\u2019s Scott Merkin<\/a>. \u201cSo much of this year will be the continual development of the young players we have on this roster.\u201d <\/p>\n

Despite Getz stating the White Sox are basically done adding on the free agent market, that doesn\u2019t mean the White Sox won\u2019t increase their payroll in other ways. Signing one of their young players to a contract extension, like the Athletics are doing with their core, signing four players in the last two years: <\/p>\n

DH Brent Rooker: five years, $60 million
\nOF Lawrence Butler: seven years, $65.5 million
\nOF Tyler Soderstrom: seven years, $86 million
\nINF Jacob Wilson: seven years, $70 million<\/p>\n

Infielder Colson Montgomery (.239 average, .840 OPS) and right-hander Shane Smith (3.81 ERA) would be the first two players to look at to sign long-term. Montgomery showed the ability to be a franchise player, and Smith made the All-Star team in his rookie season. <\/p>\n

Catchers Kyle Teel and Edgar Quero could be others worthy of an extension, with both showing the ability to hit \u2014 Teel batted .273<\/a> with an OPS of .786 in 78 games, while Quero (switch hitter) hit .268 with an OPS of .689 in 111 games<\/a>. The White Sox could also acquire a player at the trade deadline who is under a long-term contract to help increase payroll. <\/p>\n

Someone like the Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller (five years, $77 million) could be an option to give the White Sox another experienced arm. Keller has three more years remaining on his existing contract (55.7 million<\/a>) and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2029.<\/p>\n
