But after just 45 pitches in his debut, thumb inflammation sidelined him, and that’s been the extend of his on-field contribution. So far, his biggest impact has come from bullpen sessions held behind closed doors.

“Yes, Scherzer turns 41 in July. Yes, he made just nine starts last year. And yes, he’s a future Hall of Famer with three Cy Youngs and 3,000 strikeouts. But this move reeked of desperation, and so far, it’s delivered exactly what the skeptics feared: a ghost of a pitcher, not a presence.” -Garcia

Over the last three seasons, only five players have hit more home runs than Anthony Santander, a stat that helped him secure a five-year, $92.5 million contract with the Blue Jays, a team hungry for power in the corner outfield. But for the past two months, Santander has been a glaring void in the lineup.

“Yes, he’s historically a slow starter. But we’re almost into June, and he’s not heating up. If anything, he’s trending worse. Multiple strikeout games are piling up, and the power isn’t there. Rogers Centre was supposed to be a hitter-friendly haven for him. Instead, it’s highlighting his weaknesses.” -Garcia

Garcia also writes that Toronto came into 2025 aiming to make one last run with its current core, investing in short-term upgrades to bolster the rotation and deepen the lineup.

Instead, they’ve poured nearly $110 million into a starter who hasn’t taken the mound and a power bat who’s gone quiet.

The Blue Jays remain in the AL Wild Card hunt, but their margin for error is shrinking quickly. With both Scherzer and Santander locked into their contracts, finding a quick solution isn’t going to be easy.

Previously on Blue Jays Insider

Photo credit: (Photo by Vaughn Ridley/Getty Images) Bleacher Report recently released its rankings of the biggest contract busts…

[2378
11008,383,5,377,2554,16245,381,4,282,70,2553
0":"post-57201","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-toronto-blue-jays","8":"tag-2025-season","9":"tag-anthony-santander","10":"tag-baseball","11":"tag-blue-jays","12":"tag-bluejays","13":"tag-contract-busts","14":"tag-max-scherzer","15":"tag-mlb","16":"tag-toronto","17":"tag-toronto-blue-jays","18":"tag-torontobluejays
["GET
