LUCIE \u2014 Francisco Lindor is weeks away from beginning full workouts, but that doesn\u2019t mean he will be absent from the Mets scene in spring training.<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/11\/sports\/francisco-lindor-opts-for-hand-surgery-in-crushing-early-mets-blow\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">undergoing surgery last week for a broken hamate bone<\/a> in his left hand, the All-Star shortstop affirmed his hope to return in time for Opening Day, but not before he gets to mesh with the team\u2019s new cast.<\/p>\n<p>That meant showing up Sunday to Clover Park, a day ahead of the team\u2019s first full-squad workout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of new faces that I want to get to know and I wanted to interact with them,\u201d Lindor said. \u201cJust being outside with the guys \u2026 it sucks I can\u2019t be out there doing everything they do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindor is facing a six-week recovery from the surgery, which was performed Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38503583\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/new-york-mets-francisco-lindor-121408608.jpg\" alt=\"New York Mets' Francisco Lindor during Spring Training at Clover Field.\" class=\"wp-image-38503583\"  \/>Francisco Lindor is pictured Feb. 15 during the Mets\u2019 spring training. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t back away from the notion he\u2019ll play on Opening Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very optimistic,\u201d Lindor said. \u201cMy goal is to be there. I trust the Mets staff and feel like they have dealt with it many times and they are really good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindor said he had dealt with discomfort in the hand \u201cover the years\u201d and following a full workout Feb. 6 felt something was amiss, which led to the surgery decision.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Lindor was scratched from the World Baseball Classic \u2014 he was set to serve as Puerto Rico\u2019s captain \u2014 after the event\u2019s insurer denied him coverage. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt definitely caught me by surprise,\u201d Lindor said of the denied insurance coverage. \u201cI felt like I was ready. \u2026 They hadn\u2019t seen me [play] all offseason and I had surgery at the end of the [season].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even an intervention by Bad Bunny couldn\u2019t help \u2014 the Puerto Rican rapper offered to purchase an insurance policy for the shortstop, but the WBC wouldn\u2019t allow it, according to Lindor.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate how much [Bad Bunny] cares for Puerto Rico,\u201d Lindor said. \u201cHe wanted Puerto Rico to be as strong as it can be, but it didn\u2019t work out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindor said the offseason overhaul of the Mets \u2014 spearheaded by president of baseball operations David Stearns \u2014 was understandable given the disappointing manner last season ended, with the team missing the playoffs. The new cast includes Freddy Peralta, Devin Williams, Bo Bichette, Jorge Polanco, Marcus Semien and Luis Robert Jr., with Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil and Edwin D\u00edaz among the departed.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDelivering insights on all things Amazin\u2019s\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Mets by Mike Puma, exclusively on Sports+\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe year didn\u2019t end the way we all wanted and it\u2019s a business and you have a feeling that every year is not going to look the same,\u201d Lindor said. \u201cStearns is one of the best and this group, they are great, so it was interesting to see how they went about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll offseason it seemed it was quiet and then all of a sudden it wasn\u2019t quiet and then it went back to being quiet,\u201d Lindor said. \u201cThey did a really good job with how they did it.
