Boston Red Sox President and CEO Sam Kennedy met with the media at spring training on Sunday, answering questions about the team\u2019s busy offseason<\/a> and other topics heading into the 2026 campaign.<\/p>\n

Not surprisingly, he was asked about Alex Bregman\u2019s stunning departure<\/a> in free agency. Despite being considered favorites to re-sign Bregman, the Red Sox shockingly lost him to the Chicago Cubs, who offered the All-Star third baseman a larger contract with a more favorable deferral schedule and the no-trade clause he was reportedly seeking<\/a>. <\/p>\n

During Sunday\u2019s press conference, Kennedy caused a stir<\/a> among Boston\u2019s fanbase by saying, \u201cIf Alex Bregman wanted to be here, ultimately, he\u2019d be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

While that may be true, the Red Sox also seemingly deserve some blame<\/a> for Bregman\u2019s exit after drawing out negotiations with him and ultimately not matching the Cubs\u2019 final offer. <\/p>\n

Kennedy addressed the reaction<\/a> to those remarks during a separate interview with NESN\u2019s Tom Caron and Lou Merloni on Monday.<\/p>\n

Much different tone from Sam Kennedy on the Alex Bregman front this morning: <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s totally fair. Sometimes I get myself in trouble by saying too much, then I get myself in trouble by not saying enough,\u201d Kennedy acknowledged.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think with Alex Bregman, I\u2019ll just leave it at huge gratitude for what he meant to this organization. He\u2019s an awesome guy. We loved having him in that clubhouse\u2026We really wish him well,\u201d Kennedy added.<\/p>\n

On a similar note, Kennedy also touched on Boston\u2019s Rafael Devers trade<\/a> again. He said there was \u201ca breakdown in communication\u201d and called the trade \u201cprobably one of the toughest decisions we\u2019ve had to make as an organization\u2026it was really hard and difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the Red Sox probably could have handled both situations better, they still have a talented roster and a promising outlook heading into the 2026 season, which Kennedy is excited about<\/a>.<\/p>\n
