there \u2013 the Cards swooped in.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust from the past three weeks I\u2019ve been here, I would love to be a Yankee for the rest of my career,\u2019\u2019 said Winquest, who became the first MLB Rule 5 draftee by the Yanks since 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Yankees taking a chance on Cade Winquest<\/p>\n<p>Leading into the draft, \u201cWe did an evaluation on a handful of guys and he kind of popped among that group,\u2019\u2019 said Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think everybody felt good about taking a chance on a guy who\u2019d been in Double-A as a starter (3.19 ERA, 8 starts after his 2025 promotion) and has some upside.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Winquest must remain on the Yanks\u2019 big-league roster all season, or else he\u2019ll be offered some positive attention in camp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an electricity there,\u2019\u2019 manager Aaron Boone said after watching Winquest\u2019s recent session against live batters, including and we\u2019re trying to piece some stuff around it,\u2019\u2019 said Blake, notably the introduction of a sinker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s working really well and I don\u2019t know why I haven\u2019t been throwing it my whole career,\u2019\u2019 said Winquest, who began using the sinker two weeks after the Yanks drafted him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a pitch I\u2019m falling in love with.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Blake and the Yanks\u2019 pitching development team have also worked to tighten the spin on Winquest\u2019s four-seam fastball, but the sinker could be a difference maker.<\/p>\n<p>Based on Winquest\u2019s three-quarter delivery and release point, the sinker seemed \u201clike a good fit,\u2019\u2019 said Blake, and \u201che took to that pretty
