Mandatory Credit: Robert Deutsch-Imagn Images

There was a point, not too long ago, when it felt like the Yankees’ season might be circling the drain before it even began. Gerrit Cole was shut down before Opening Day. Giancarlo Stanton had a brand new ailment: tennis elbow in both arms. Luis Gil, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, was out for months with a lat strain. And just a few weeks later, to round it all out, Jazz Chisholm Jr. strained his oblique so badly it tore in three places.

Yet here they are, heading toward the end of May with six straight series wins and one of the best records in baseball. And most importantly, with reinforcements on the way. Almost timed perfectly enough for Brian Cashman to call them trade acquisitions.

Yankees Injury Update

Giancarlo Stanton is in Tampa, where he’s expected to get daily live at-bats in simulated games starting Tuesday. He’ll also begin running the bases as he works back from dual elbow issues that landed him on the 60-day injured list. Brian Cashman said Sunday that Stanton could spend two weeks hitting in sim games before starting a rehab assignment. Manager Aaron Boone wouldn’t commit to that timeline but said, “He should be able to replicate a lot of things this week… then we’ll see what we’re going to do next week.”

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is scheduled to go through a full workout tomorrow and then could go out on a rehab assignment later in the week, per Boone.

Luis Gil should get off the mound for the first time on Friday.

— Greg Joyce (@GJoyce9) May 26, 2025

Jazz Chisholm is just a few steps behind. Out since April 30, the second baseman began light workouts Monday and will ramp things up Tuesday. Live BP is on the docket, and the Yankees hope to get him into rehab games by the weekend. Boone said the team expects him back “within the next week hopefully.”

ALSO READ: Shohei Ohtani’s Pitching Return Makes Everything Bigger

Luis Gil, meanwhile, is targeting July after beginning his throwing program in late April. He’s scheduled to get back on the mound Friday. “Louie is doing really good,” Boone said. “He feels really good.”

Injury updates from the dugout: Jazz Chisholm Jr. could be playing in Minor League rehab games by the end of the week, Giancarlo Stanton is in Tampa and will be having live at-bats all week, Fernando Cruz is with the team in Anaheim and should toss live BP during the Dodgers…

— Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch) May 26, 2025

Fernando Cruz (shoulder inflammation) has been playing catch and is scheduled for a bullpen session Wednesday in Anaheim. If all goes well, he might face hitters this weekend and be activated next week. Jake Cousins (elbow flexor strain) threw 30 pitches off a mound on Saturday, a good sign after some minor pectoral discomfort briefly stalled his progress.

There’s less optimism around Marcus Stroman, who’s missed 40 games with knee inflammation. He threw a pair of clean bullpens last week, and live BP is the next hurdle. If his knee holds up, he could be in play sometime in July.

As for the long-term absences: Oswaldo Cabrera is in the early stages of recovery from a fractured ankle and likely won’t be seen until 2026. Gerrit Cole remains on track in his post-Tommy John recovery. Now 11 weeks out from surgery, he’s focused on arm strengthening and may begin light throwing in August, assuming no setbacks.

ALSO READ: The Best Pitcher in Baseball?
